Model 7000 radio not working

Good Afternoon,

The car is a 24v ultima which is fitted with the model 7000 radio which has stopped working. In the central fuse box I have checked the 5 amp fuse number 8 which has not failed. Any suggestions please?

Check the removable security panel to make sure it is properly fitted. Is it totally 'dead'? Has the battery been disconnected recently ? Could the ribbon cable at the back have come loose? Smiley
Have a look at This page which, in the list of connections, mentions fuse 24. The handbook also says it covers 'interior lights/audio systems'.

Good Morning Simmo,

Thank you for providing the link to the 7000 RDS connections which ultimately were not needed.

When I purchased my 6,000 mile Ultima early in 1998 it came with a Ford warranty and an apparently faulty steering column radio control. The fault was intermittent and after several trips to the Ford garage a replacement steering column control was fitted and then a new 7000 RDS radio.

The warranty expired and but the fault persisted, however I discovered that I had a faulty multiplug(s) behind the radio but by applying a slight sideways pressure good contacts were made. The pressure was maintained by using a rubber band which has now perished.

The rubber band has now been replaced by a piece of soft plastic to force the plugs away from each other which is probably a more permanent cure and the radio is working.

Thank you again for your help.

Glad you are sorted and thank you for detailing the cause. It is just this sort of information which helps with problems in the future. Wink

Any ideas how to solve the blank/frozen display. Have tried the air dryer and radiator trick. Fine for a few miles then goes again.

Kev, I think Mike is referring to the security panel. It's the removable panel shown Here which is used to programme the code etc. Just remove it and carefully clean the contacts. Right click on the page and select'Rotate clockwise'. It won't let me adjust it before posting. Wink

Er yeah I meant the actual glass 'information display' window bit. Might just be the fascia connections though.

Mike. If that is the case how would one go about doing such a thing? Huh  Like Kev I'd be at a loss as to how to tackle that I feel.

Well yes means taking it to bits Grin

A while ago I thought I found a good web page about it but can't find it now, keep getting ones about faultfinding laptop and flat screen TV's  Roll Eyes

Right after about 40 minutes of searching I came with this which at least has a picture of what I want:

http://www.zaxisconnector.com/LCD-Connectors.shtml

The display has invisible conductive tracks on the glass (much like a PCB) and rubbery things colloquially known as 'zebra strips' which contain many tiny flat springs sandwiched beteen insulator layers which connect the display's tracks to the PCB pads. It is not unusual for these connections to go open-circuit. My old DMM has to have its ones cleaned every 2 or 3 years or so. I most probably use a cotton bud type thing wetted with switch contact cleaner but be very careful any hairs don't come off and get left behind. The zebra strips must be treated with extreme care and any solvent could cause them to swell and possibly become useless. In case of extreme necessity might be possible to clean them carefully with say a cotton handerchief wrapped around index finger and dampened lightly with contact cleaner. The next problem is putting all the bits back together and see if it works lol Grin

I'm assuming of course that's how the radio fascia is assembled.

I think what this is doing is expanding / contracting the parts with the contacts until they touch again, unfortunately if the fundamental problem is oxidation of the contact points the only real fix is to go to inside Grin

Even then it will only be OK until the next time.

I'm still assuming that's how the 7000 et al display is connected, an alternative might be a flat ribbon cable that is bonded to the glass, in which case it's the other end that's possibly got the bad connection as they just plug into a connector. Dunno I'm just guessing never taken one apart. Grin

Ah there is this:

on Nov 20th, 2008, 4:21pm, Jonnycab wrote:
Yee-haw !!!..........I've managed to fix the LCD display  Cheesy

I removed the radio facia, then the main board, then the LCD housing & then pulled out the plastic ribbon connector from the LCD board & unclipped the LCD screen.

Next I put the screen in a freezer bag, then sealed it & put it in the deep freeze  Cool

4 hours later I removed the frost bitten culprit from the freezer, reassembled the radio & stuck it back in the car &..........VOILA.......it worked !!!!

The radio now has all the LCD characters back on the screen & is working fine  Cheesy.....hopefully it will be a long term fix  Smiley

So there is a ribbon cable involved.

It may have been that just unplugging the ribbon and putting it back might have been sufficient.

JC had already tried unplugging and cleaning the ribbon but it didn't work.
I think others have tried as was suggested in the last post of that thread - put the radio in the freezer & had success.

I too have a 7000 which has lost its display after a discharged battery. The display came on faintly the 3rd time I started the car , then on the 4th came on normally, but now is off again (the radio is working). Found this old post and wondered if Jonnycab had found the freezer treatment to be long lasting.

Not too worried about the display. My problem is NO radio at all. There must be power reaching it as there is a red flashing security lamp behind the removable panel, but nothing works.

Have you tried cleaning the removable security panel contacts with contact cleaner?. Sometimes it will help. Smiley
