Oh No...Not Again !!

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action= display;num=1241134151;start=

It's happened again, a couple of years (50K ish miles) later & exactly the same as before !!

One minute driving along fine & the next....it's like something has gone pop inside the autobox & she's gradually not wanting to select second gear anymore, unless I go easy  Huh

Exactly the same problem as a couple of years ago & me thinks that the 'transmission specialist' that I took it to before, has fitted a cheapo servo seal that has now blown & is causing a pressure problem when the autobox tries to select second gear  Undecided

That's my diagnosis anyway  Wink

I'm gonna give it a go myself before I call in the big boys, but am not certain which servo piston serves the second gear....front or centre... 10 & 11 on this page

Also, where would I buy a new servo/seal from ?

Any advice, would be nice  Smiley

Centre Servo Jonny,
buy it from Sussex Autoparts, Hailsham, but there are lots of different sizes, so you need to clean the cover and get the code..............
It will be 2 letters AB or somesuch, that will tell them what size you need  Smiley

Cheers Dave

Jon, their web site is Here. Looks like you can get an on line catalogue. They are a few miles away from me so if I can help in any way call me. Good luck, Mike.
UPDATE: I've rung them and, given the detail which Dave has mentioned, they can supply and would have in stock. HTH. Wink

Thanks for that Dave, I did speak to an autobox specialist yesterday & he told me he was certain that it was the centre servo (one nearest the rear), so thanks for confirming it  Smiley

Thanks for the parts info chaps, if I can't source one locally (need it in a hurry), then I'll ring them  Smiley

So, what, it's blown its seal?

Is this servo replacable from the outside?

It's defo a blown servo seal as you can see....

But why it would go like this after only being fitted a couple of years ago is anyones guess (it's a Ford part).....And that great big chunk of rubber that's missing is nowhere to be seen.
It wasn't in the cap, so I can only assume it's somewhere in the gearbox  Huh
......unless this is the original seal & the trans specialist who said they replaced it a couple of years ago just pulled the cap off & filled it with vaseline or similar in the hope it would last longer than I would own the car  Undecided

Dave 2302, what's your professional opinion ?  Smiley....the rubber is pretty hard.

Mike H, you can see the servo cap if you get under the car & you can also remove the circlip ring (it's not easy though), but getting the piston out is impossible without further surgery, as the transmission tunnel stops it coming out all of the way  Wink

I did consider bashing the transmission tunnel with a hammer (lump in the footwell  Roll Eyes), even considered pulling the carpet up & cutting a hole in the footwell to access it & weld it back later  Wink.....but decided to do it properly, well kind off  Wink

Had to remove the gearbox mounting cross member (box held up on a jack) & drop the box as far as it would go without stressing the prop, exhaust etc too much....& then lever the box sideways with a bar (side impact bar from an old rear door against a piece of wood protecting the trans tunnel) & that gave enough clearance to get the servo piston out.

Managed to get a new Ford piston, cap (old one was scored) & new cap 'O' ring for a tenner from a local trans specialist....new old stock they'd had on the shelf for a while.

If anyone is wondering, I did ring Ford & the part is now obsolete  Roll Eyes

Anyway, I'll stick the new piston in tomorrow & let y'all know if it's cured the problem  Smiley

Hi Jonny,

That is an OLD Second Hand Piston that was fitted, the older ones do go like that, it's not damaged in fitting, the fluid pressure gets underneath and rips it because the old type de laminate..............

Seen it a million times, it's my bet that whoever did the job didn't have the right size in stock so they just took a second hand one out of an old "Core Unit"   Wink

A Brand New one woud have lasted far far longer...............

Unfortunately there is Auto Box Specialists and then there is "Auto Box Specialists"  Angry

Yes Jon they are a bit tight to get out but what you did is exactly what I do if I need to change them.

Glad you're sorted,

Cheers Dave

Dave, so you reckon that they fitted a second hand one....the rotton scoundrels  Roll Eyes

I suppose it's possible if they didn't have a new one, but that was 2 & a half years ago & they did only charge me £97....so not too many complaints I suppose  Wink

The weird thing is though, I bought the new one from the same trans specialist & it is a brand new identical Ford part (well, new old stock as Ford have now discontinued it). The trans specialist is a well renowned & recommended specialist that has been in business for many years.
I wonder what the production date is on these things & whether they don't last as long as they should due to a limited shelf life ?  Undecided

Also, what do you mean by 'de-laminate' ?....the new one I bought looks fine, it's a much more snug fit & the rubber isn't hard/brittle at all, but will it last ?
The pic below is the new one (left) & old one (right)

I'm now starting to worry that I may have fitted a new seal that has sat on a shelf for years & might quickly deteriorate after a few thousand miles  Undecided

Anyway, the thing is fitted now & the gearbox etc all bolted back up, but I don't know if it's sorted the problem as I haven't had a drive yet...
Reason why ?.....being a complete & utter dope  Tongue, I completely forgot to buy any dexron III to replace the 3 litres or so that was lost when replacing the piston & by the time I finished, it was too late. The local motor factors were shut...DOH !!!  Roll Eyes

Will let y'all know tomorrow if it's 'job done'  Smiley

Hi Jonny If the rubber isn't hard it should be ok. With time they will harden and become less effective. As with any part you can get the odd one that is not upto standard and thus doesn't last as long as is should do.
