1..........That's the only reason I can think that it failed so quickly, they normally last at leas 70,000 miles when new !!
2..........No idea mate, I'm not slating them and the price was very good, but it really should not have gone hard that quickly 
3..........The rubber bit is bonded to the metal during manufacture, Ford produced a batch about 20 years ago that weren't up to scratch and as they went hard oil pressure would get betwen the metal and rubber and force it apart, making a big split exactly like the one in your picture
I wouldn't worry about getting them in the future, alhough Ford UK list them as NLA, the Auto Box Parts Specialists in this country all buy in from America, companies like Trans Star produce pattern ones which are just as good
