Did you check how tight the spark plugs were, they are prone to coming loose – could cause the smell.

I didn't have a long enough socket on me but I did replace the sparkplugs a couple of months ago so maybe they have worked loose. I will check.

No Mike one of the ht lead clips that clip onto the sparkplug wasn't on properly. No 1 and 3 plugs are in tight and I will check the other 2 tomorrow in the light.

So it could just be loose plugs after all letting fumes out, that would do it I guess.

All plugs checked and are as tight as can be. On starting it thismorning I stood outside the car with the bonnet up to see if I could spot anything. There was no smell in the engine bay but it sounded as if one cylinder was missing every now and again for about 2 minutes then it started running as sweet as a nut. I will try it again a bit later.

Have you checked there are no missing bungs between the engine compartment and the cabin or between the engine compartment & the area in front of the windscreen & between that area & the cabin. Also that the aircon drains are in place (engine bay smells that may be worse at start up are likely to be drawn in otherwise). Do you get the smell regardless of whether the heating/ventilation is on or off.

Can't see any bungs missing. Not sure where the aircon drains are. The smell is there when the blowers are on or off. having said that the aircon comes on as soon as you start the car to circulate the cool air across the windows to stop them misting up.

Thanks mike stixy recons it might be the injectors. Sorry for the delay in the reply but I am and have been very busy lately with the misses deciding to have a very bad mental breakdown that she can't admit to and the doc's say they can't do anything until she does so now I am reaching the same point.

Similar problem I had on one of our estate cars last year. It turned outto be pin hole perforations at top of fuel tank. This was due to old age and "water"or dampness sitting on top of tank where it is shaped to sit under spare wheel carrier area.Might explain slightly high fuel consumption because of evaporation, and apparent disappearance when travelling asfumes go "back" ascar goes forward. Hope last sentance makes sense and remarks are helpful.

Yes I keep coming back around to hole(s) in the tank as well, doesn't mean it's dripping on the floor necessarily, but can be somewhere near the top above the fuel level like Dave says. Think there was a topic a while ago about one that been reversed into a grassy bank that split a tank seam, he could only fill it about halfway else it might dribble out IIRC. Or something like that

Literally just come across something on the Moto Guzzi forum ~ modern fuels, as in last few years, have had increasing amounts of ethanol added which is corrosive to older spec fuel hose. "If there is a stink of petrol, but you can't find a leak, then it is very likely that vapour is permeating through the fuel hose" - info trawled from US web sources apparently. Unmarked hose - will probably be for the original petrol formula, without modern additives (but see later comments). SAE 30R6 - This is the standard for the petrol formula of 5 - 10 years ago, for fuel injection. The bore may or may not be lined with Nitrile. SAE 30R7 - This is the standard for the petrol formula of 2 or 3 years ago, for fuel injection. The bore is lined with Nitrile. SAE 30R9 / 30R10 - This is the current standard. The bore is lined with Fluoroelastomer/Nitrile. 30R9 has Fluoroelastomer/Nitrile on the inside, while 30R10 has it inside and out, which allows it to be used immersed in petrol (e.g. in a fuel tank). US sources suggest 30R10 for injection systems (30R9 for carburettors) "One of the causes of fuel pipe failure described in the USA literature is stale modern fuel, not so much the fuel itself. These fuels become extra-corrosive when they get old." A cited e-mail conversation between Eurocarb and the Dell'Orto agents in the UK include the following hint: "According to Dell'Orto the standard amounts of ethanol will not affect the carburettor internals. I would avoid supermarket fuels though as these seem to have a higher content."

Hi I had a similar problem....turned out to be the green 'o' ring had split in half at the rear of the fuel rail, where the tank feed pipe and fuel rail pipes merge. there is what looks like a small filter held in place by two bolts, when removed you can check the condition of the seal.
