Flat completely flat. Not a thingyy bird. No indication of a problem whatsoever. Started this morning having stood all weekend, no dancing dials, came out at lunchtime wouldnt unlock? so used the key. No dash lights no interior lights no nothing not even door warning lights. So where do I start?  2.5 TD estate of course.

(I didnt write "thingy bird" it changed it from d i c k y bird)

Looks like glowplugs could be  stuck on. removed fuse and seems to hold charge. Is there a relay somewhere or a diagram?

Heated windscreen light is on without ignition. Removed fuse from F41 LHS Windscreen heater and it goes off. But battery is now flat so charging. see what happens later. But the glowplug relay (the good one) is not working. Going to test it but I think it has broken??

1998 R reg .   Is there something like a temperature sensor that turns these glowplugs off when the engine is running?
or do they stay on all the time?

They are controlled with the relay. It has a circuit inside that keeps the glow plugs on while on cold start

WELL ITS ALL VERY WEIRD.  The glowplug relay wont come on. so I hot wired them to start the car. when it was warm all is ok except warning indicator doesnt come on. ie glowplugs wont work but when warm it doesnt need them. So When I turned it off it wouldnt stop runningHuh?  so I drove it round the block and turned it off. It was OK. I opened up the fuse box and yes water. I've dried it all out odd things seem to  have stopped happening. The glowplugs still wont come on? The relay does work I swapped it back just to be sure. The car  does now turn off. For the timebeing. Does the 1st injector need power to stop the engine or does it need power removing??  Its automatic so can't shove it in1st and stall it!!

Looks like Matt was right !. Wink  You may think you've dried the fusebox BUT have a read of This article. As you will see from the picture the box is made up of several layers and the copper contacts sit in shallow depressions. If dampness is still in any of these 'tracks' it will cause problems. You may need to spend time with a hair dryer to try and dry it out further. The main point is how did the water get in there?. Have you got both the fusebox cover and a battery cover properly fitted?. If you have then you need to check that the drain holes are clear around the base of the battery.
Look at This page which will show you how to remove the bulkhead panel in front of the battery to ensure it is clear.

Yes, Simmo asks the best question, how did it get in there? Fuse cover was  on. Battery cover was on, drain holes and battery compartment clear at the minute I'm fooled. I have a spare fuse box from a 94 Granda Scorpio somewhere ,does any one know if they are the same. Matt If I cant find it or if it is different I might take you up on your offer. In the meantime I can still use the car with the glowplug button I have rigged up on the dashboard" In the meantime back to Hairdrying!!!!

Another item which might help is to aquire some silica packages..like those suplied with cameras etc.. as they are designed to draw out moisture, and place them in the box. Wink

Good Idea Simmo. Stuffed it full of these packages over the week end, and it seems to be behaving itself for now. Still flumuxed as to how it got wet  in the first place.

I was giving my battery tray a good clean out with soapy water when I changed the battery recently. It struck me it wouldn’t drain very well if you parked on a steep uphill gradient.

The battery cover should have a raised boss where the nut goes to prevent water seeping through the hole. I know these often break off but I wouldn’t have thought it would get across to fuse box.
