Radweld or Barrs leaks?

Anyone know which is best please? my 2-3 manifold playing up, i Re-sealed the stat housing yesterday with Liquid Steel, but realised it s leaking from under the front two manifold bolts. so the repair on stat housing was not the full problem! sod it, The problem is that the MOT is in a few days, i am expecting something needed to be done, but if it passes i will fit another minfold, (preferably Alloy off a 2-0) i dont want to fit a new Mani only for the car to fail, in  a major way! it's a nice car and only done 157k! Any advice please,
Thanks Bob

Bob, I think it is a generally held view that our cars do not like these products. IF the car passes and you change the manifold it's possible you could have problems subsequently because of the additives.Just hang fire and see if others share my views.  Good luck. Mike Smiley

I prefer Barrs, but like Simmo says it can cause problems. If the inside of the matrix has started to break up you’ll likely find your heater packs up.
It may just be the waterway gasket leaking but it’s more likely to be the steel sleeve in the manifold expanding due to rust & cracking the manifold.

Thanks guys,i am wary of using either, in fact i completely messed up the heater matrix before by using one of them, again that was due to the blessed plastic manifold, it took me many flushes with chemicles to clear it then, but desperate measures required now, i am going to try a finger full of the liquid steel, (pretty good stuff!) over the area, i hate bodging things, but if that works at least i can get it there for mot.i am fortunate that i have a 2-9 which will also need mot, crunch time i guess, cheers Bob

When I was doing the same I put the system into negative pressure to stop it leaking whilst I put on the filler.
I used an old vacuum cleaner. I put several turns of tape at the end of the hose to act as a seal & to keep the hose well above the coolant in the header tank.

If you blow up the vacuum cleaner don’t blame me Roll Eyes

Half to one tsp of nutmeg, try half first. Very effective, my granada scorpio had the treatment 6 years ago, still holding. I like the vacuum cleaner trick. Grin Grin Grin.

Well i stopped the water leak with Super steel.which i also used on the stat housing! bit of a bodge, i cut a bit of cloth, smothered the cloth with mixed super steel, also put some round the join, mani to head, using the cloth i could mold it round the lower front part of the manifold front water port connection into the head,  no more leak,
anther question, can i swap my two newer tyres, on 12 spoke alloy wheels to the front in place of my steel wheels with grotty tyres? am i right in thinking this is ok if on the same axle ? thanks guys Bob

Personally I'd prefer to avoid putting addative in the coolant, but have a more 'proper fix', but just IMO

I agree Mike, the problem is i don't want to spend too much on this car, as it may fail the mot next week, if it passes i will fit a manifold, etc. if it fails i'll spend the money on my 2-9 instead,

Hey Tomp, there couldn't have been much water in that header-tank surely?   And aint that a bit of an 'old-banger' of an upright vacuum?   My wifes new Bosch vacuum would suck the water out of the header even if it was near the bottom of the tank!!!   I remember about 30 years ago using a vacuum to do the same thing for a leaking radiator on a 'Type-3' locomotive whilst slapping a great wadge of 'Devcon' on the outside of the rad.   Did this on an open platform in a snow blizzard at Garsdale, and it did ruin the vacuum cleaner, and the station staff were not impressed!

I know what you mean about putting in sealing agents, but my heater matrix was leaking and did not fancy taking the dash out in the middle of winter. I was going to wait untill summer but the repair has been so good I have not bothered Grin Grin.

Whenever I obtained another vehicle for my funeral fleet, amongst other operations the cooling system was always flushed with the thermostat and radiator hoses removed,50/50 coolant was then installed complete with a bottle of Bars which contains soluble oil and what is possibly dessicated nutmeg. The idea is that the coagulant works when contacting the atmosphere, and will not clog waterways whilst in circulation.I have used the stuff for over thirty years on a regular basis and never had a problem,in fact I swear by it as a positive anti seepage agent, and always keep a stock in hand.

Come on Gozz. That would be too easy for Tompion !!. He'd probably say his 'system' was an aqua vac because it was a vacuum dealing with aqua!!. Grin Roll Eyes
