New MOT rules

Hi All, I read with some consternation that the airbag indication light on the instrument cluster is going to be a deciding factor in the issue of a new MOT certificate. In my case the lamp illuminates after the car has been running for a few minutes, and then remains lit. Of course, it is a moot point whether the airbag would still deploy after sixteen years of non-use, and I hate to think of the cost of having the unit checked out by a main dealer. So, what to do? Is there a simple get around to this problem? It seems harsh to fail an otherwise "perfect" car on this point. I would be interested in your comments. Cheers FW.

Fred Those symptoms are not unusual, assuming it’s just staying on or flickering (but not flashing a code) it could be a dirty connection behind the instrument cluster, however on mine the connectors & wires behind the dash look as good as new. I’ve always suspected the problem with mine was within the instrument cluster & I finally got round to looking at it a few days ago. So far I’ve not had the problem return since soldering the pin for the airbag. I posted briefly about it here: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=di splay;num=1330135415 Assuming the problem doesn’t return I’ll post more about it when it’s had a longer test. I think you'll find that if you simply snipped off the LED so it is no longer Illuminated, then it would probably pass Yes Yes, I know technically it shouldn't, but I'm yet to see any tester bother to do a start up illumination test on the dash warning lights, normally if it ain't on they don't fail it I find most faults that put the light on are damaged / unplugged wires to the pretensioners under the seats, a code read will point you in the right direction HTH Dave
