Vacuum probs?

Hi,  The other day, belting up a local hill, there was a sudden noise a bit like a gasket/exhaust blowing and power started to tail off.  To cut a long story short, it hasn't got better on its own and, having had it looked at by a friendly mechanic, I'm none the wiser.  The two rubber hoses that seem to come from a vacuum unit by the exhaust manifold had come off - when I put them back on again and revved the engine, they came off again!  I can only assume they are something to go with the vacuum system because the car is absolutely gutless when on any incline but will run like normal on the flat.  I have put new hoses on and they seem to stay fixed but this is the car's last chance - I told it that if it gave me any more trouble it would be appearing in the 'breaking for spares' section this weekend....
cheers

There is a fair chance your cat has collapsed, causing back pressure.

I agree with Gozz. There is a article on this somewhere on the site but I can't locate it at the moment. IIRC the fact that the hoses have blown off is a classic sign and the symptoms are exactly as described in Fault Finder.

I had this trouble with the vacuum hoses blowing off and sure enough the cat was the problem. Changing it was the cure Wink  Lee

thanks guys.  I did take it to a local exhaust centre because it first sounded like the exhaust had blown and they looked underneath and said it was ok.  There is also a high pitched squeky whistling noise whenever I accelerate - does that confrim the diagnosis?
ps  - a cat will be cheap, won't it Sad

Yes, sounds like it’s the cat.

Have a look here for prices:
http://www.cats-direct-shop.co.uk/ford-catalytic-converter.php?pageNum_R ecordset1=8&totalRows_Recordset1=192

There’s ceramic or metal (dearer).
Looks as though ones with H suffix are type approved (dearer).

You only need to fit a Type Approved Cat [ i.e. more expensive Shocked ] if your car was first registered after 01/03/2001.

That's right Mike. Under pressure from a blocked cat they blow off Smiley

Probably just as well, like a "safety valve" Grin

All seems to point to that then.

NB: my Roll Eyes before was re: the exhaust fit people not thinking anything might be wrong with the cat because it looked OK from the outside.

Hi guys, new cat fitted - problem solved!
thanks for all your help.
Had to take the exhaust manifold off to get at the bolts - now I need to track down a manifold gasket...    Sad
