Hi all
Just been cleaning the leather in the car and had the cd player on and moved the front pass seat forward to have more space. Then the cd player just stopped so i turned it off. then it made this ticking noise from around the radio/ingition area and all the electrics are only working very slowly. tried to start it and nothing happens.  Huh It has a toad alarm system could be this? Or battery? Cd player? Or worse? If anyone has any ideas or things to try i would be very greatful. Matt came around yesterday with diagnostics and it came up all ok so no clue why today it is playing up.  Sad

Do the needles on the instrument cluster flick round when you turn on the ignition – this usually happens if the battery is low.
What’s the battery voltage? If you don’t have a meter you can use the diagnostics shown here:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm - ignition on, hold in the trip reset button for 5secs until display changes then step through to bAtt. Note after doing this the needles will always flick round next time you turn on the ignition.

You often get relays clicking if the battery is low, I’d charge it anyway.

Also if i dissconnect the battery for a new one how will the alarm react? Will it go off or not. Thinking of just taking alarm off anyway its a big pain really.

I’d charge it in situ or jump it from another car or battery if you can’t do that. Can’t comment on the after market alarm.

By the way assuming you had the radio/CD on with ignition off it turns itself off after an hour.

Yeah sounds exactly like typical battery gone flat. Grin

Keeping it charged up is at absolute must, especially if you do short journeys / and or don't drive it much.

Also every time you open it / lock it, open / close windows etc. while it's at home not being driven uses up the juice as well.

Maybe try to dump the aftermarket alarm and revert to the built-in one if poss, the extra current drain won't be helping either.

I'm curently using this solar panel charger from Maplin Electronics, the 4.9W one or whatever it is, certainly seems to do the biz, lies on the back parcel shelf when in use; it's always plugged in unless I'm actually driving it.

Aye Matt.

I use the same solar charger on Aunty.   It's very good, does a nice little 'trickle-charge' and just plugs into the rear 12V socket.   One thing to remember when using it, disconnect when starting the car and when the car is running.   I remember from instructions, and someone at work told me about ruining the cells through 'feedback'.

If you are near West Sussex, I have a almost new battery (097) still with 2 years warranty. Bought for my old scorp which I scrapped... £30

It has got a reverse blocking diode, else the same sort of thing would happen at night Grin

I have run the car forgetting to unplug it, did it this morning as a matter of fact, hasn't done it any harm yet. But yes really should be unplugged first.

If you get a cheap one rather than up to the spec mentioned in the article you'll have problems. Wink

Not sure how good the spec on these ones but put one in our 2.3 and it lasted 4 years with no probs but it will do for now. Eventually i will get a good one. If scorp kev was local id go and get his but a bit far really  Sad
