Severe rattling and vibrations from engine

I'd been driving for about 1.5 hour in my 96-model Scorpio 2.3 l DOHC when I suddenly heard a rattle noise from the engine. When I stopped and opened the bonnet, I could clearly see the engine vibrating and the rattle was loud and steady. I didn't risk to drive any further. At first, I was thinking that one of the cylinders could be misfiring, but the noise sounded quite metallic. Could the adjustment of a valve have gone bad, so that it hits the top of the piston? Anyone else had this experience with a 2.3 l DOHC?

I had a 2.3 with a failed EGR valve the other day, engine was rough and shaking but didnt sound metallic, it was also low on power and didnt want to idle Id drain off the engine oil and sieve it through a fine cloth, looking for any metallic particles or plastic (chain tensioner)

Sounds like a misfire, could be plugs or ht leads or the dearest fix, coil packs....

Sounds similar to what I had in an Astra many years ago on Easter Bank Holiday Monday on the M6 (joy): it was a dropped valve spring, I think. Certainly valve related. I think you were quite sensible not to drive further in case of damaging the innards. I doubt that a misfire would produce a metallic sound, but the engine vibration does suggest to me an imbalance caused by a piston-area problem.
