Various issues

Hi Everyone , I'm new here & could use some advice.

I've recently bought a 2.0 16V estate as a daily driver. There are a few problems that have surfaced since buying it & was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on solutions.

Firstly the battery light flickers when the revs are below 2500 rpm ... is this likely to be the alternator & voltage regulator ?

This might be connected to the above ? ... between 2000 & 2500 rpm all the dash gauges just stop working , but above or below that they are fine Huh

Should the car have come with a remote fob for the alarm ?, as I've only got the 2 keys with the chip in.

Also what is the snowflake button on the gearshift for , as it doesn't seem to do anything ?

Lastly is there a remote button inside the car to release the boot , as there appears to be an actuator on the lock , but i can't find out how to trigger it ?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

Hello and welcome HE4R5E

I think the light flickering dash problems are connected to low power.

The remote fob should have come with the car but I think that other members on here will be able to supply you with one and it is very easy to programme them.

The snowflake button by the gearshift is to change the gearbox settings to icy conditions I believe it is to help stop you wheel spinning when pulling away on ice or frozen snow.

Most if not all these things should be in your car handbook if you got one with the car.

Hope this helps a bit.   Andy

There is no internal boot release, it has to be done from the outside.
Also the boot can only be opened with the engine & ignition off. It's a safety feature....when your in a traffic jam, it ensures that thieves can't open the boot & nick it's contents before you've realised what's happened  Wink

Welcome to the site. If you don't have one the whole Handbook is here.  Smiley Page 46...click on it to enlarge..tells you about the Ice symbol which is, as Andy says, an aid to starting in snow or ice.

The Fault Finder on the front page of the site may also help re the electrical issues but I would agree with JC.

Definitely Alternator, and I think that problem will solve the dials issue.   One thing to note regarding the key-fob, they're not cheap unless a member is willing to let one go for a small price if the person has a spare.   Make fully sure before you bid on ebay or such that the fob is guaranteed working, I got two non-working ones before I got what I wanted.    Mustang ones from the USA with 'Panic' where the boot release is do the job and have better innards, but be careful it was a short production-run where I think they adapted British ones because they'd run-out, and I'm not sure what years.   I think there's a 'Taxi' program that allows the boot release whilst the engine is running?

There is but I think it is only programmable with an FDS 2000 kit.

yep only a fds can reprogram the boot so it opens with engine running. you can also retro fit a boot popper inside the cabin

Thanks for all your advice , looks like i need to find myself a good second hand alternator ,  as these cars aren't exactly common in Scrapyards these days are there any compatible ones from Mondeos , focus etc that will fit ?

Also in the last couple of days it has developed another strange fault. late last night the reversing nights came on & stayed on , while the car was in park , locked up , without the keys in it ! ....... Now correct me if I'm wrong , but don't the reversing lights only usually work with the ignition on ?..... any ideas what's causing this ?

Sounds like a dreaded wiring issue. Could it be that the snow/ice has caused a short or similar?.  Huh

They aren't super expensive from motor factors - £70 to £90.
