Base Idle Help.

Hi Folks. Urgently need help for a 1994 2.9 12 valve Granada. This is the same engine as the Scorpio model which followed the Granada range. Problem is with idle speed. Not the usual ISCV/TPS topics although they may be involved somewhere. the idle at start up soars to 1600, holds for about ten seconds then slowly falls to 1100. Goes to approx 900 when in gear, but neutral or park produces 1100. Any blip of the throttle in neutral/park and the above high revs scenario happens again. Checked vacuum leaks, throttle body, ISCV/TPS/MAP sensor, changed lambda sensors etc to no avail. The throttle stop screw is right back and indeed is doing nothing where it is. This all came about when a new TPS was fitted and another throttle body installed. I have replaced the original body and checked everything but still high revs. There has been an age old problem with idling on this car but this is a new scenario. It also eats petrol, as in 16mpg. Hoping someone with a later Scorpio 2.9 can help with this one, and also how do I reset the base idle speed as I think the ECU is totally confused. I have also changed this but no difference. This is confusing some fairly experienced mechanics and I am on the verge of entering a home for the bewildered! Many Thanks.

The symptoms you mention are consistent with a faulty TPS it was/is a common problem on the 12v. With regards the position of the throttle stop. You can only adjust the tick over speed when in diagnostic mode and you need the FDS to do that. even adjusting the distributor will result in the Engine management attempting to put it back. There are set procedures for doing all of that. Suggest you try and contact one of the members on here with access to the FDS or try taking the little resistor off the side of one and try cleaning it by taking apart . Is there a small vacuum pipe under the TPS on the Granada.. If so Please check it for integrity etc as it does affect the engine running and also gear box on the auto models.
