I'm sure there must be a knack to this problem which I'm hoping someone can let me in on. Due to a sticking F/O/S brake I've stripped down and cleaned the brake caliper, removing and cleaning the caliper piston. I've got a service kit containing replacement rubber rings and seals etc. I've had the piston refitted with the new ring but how do you go about fitting the rubber dust seal ( not sure what it's called, the rubber bellows that stops muck getting onto the piston. I've tried various ways, trying to fit it with the piston in, trying to fit it before the piston, trying to slide it into its groove as I fit the piston, always without success!! The old bellows was split which I think caused the sticking in the first place.It seems daft that the cars unuseable because I can't work out how to fit this. Help or advice much apprieciated.

It's been a while since I did that job,as I remember the boot is fitted to the piston,then fiddled into the groove in the cylinder before the piston is entered,not easy,but not impossible.A little of that red Girling cylinder grease is always a good idea.

But the way i do it is to fit the dust seal to the piston first and slide it to the endof the piston so the little rib for the caliper side is hanging off the back, i then carefully fit the rib into the caliper (with the piston still out of the seal ring) then once the rib is in correctly i then start the piston into the seal.
 
If you lightly lube the piston at this point as you pust the piston into the caliperthe dust seal will slide up into its grove in the piston. You may need to slide the boot up and down a bit to get it to seat in the ridge

Thanks for that fella's, as I suspected a proper fiddly job rather then an easy knack. At least watching the video proves to me that it can be done, I was convinced it was impossible! I must remember to check you tube for useful things more often. I'll let you know how it goes. Malcolm.

JOB DONE, THANKS. Not the easiest job, and certainly fiddly, but when it did all line up and slip in I wondered why I was struggling in the first place. Everything now back together, just waiting for wife or son to get home from work so that I can bleed them, but looking o.k............I think. Malcolm.

Read the instructions on bleeding the brakes.

If you don't do it correctly you will still have air in the system.
 
It can be difficult to get rid of all the air.

Thanks for the brake bleeding article. I bled the F/O/S brake because that's the one I had worked on and air free fluid eventually came through. Is the article saying that your supposed to bleed both N/S and O/S ? In section 3 (5) do you release pedal up with the bleed nipple open, that's how I read it. I've always tightened nipple with the pedal held down, which I did and everything seems o.k. with a nice firm pedal.

The most important thing is to make sure the bleed tube is HIGHER than the nipple otherwise you WILL get air back in the system.
