Alternator not charging

It was raining the other night and I caught sight of the battery warning light illuminated. The engine was just warming up and after 1/2 mile it went out Phew!!
Friday night battery seemed down, just starting. Saturday morning not enough power to turn engine. Charged battery and tested the charging, It isnt?? Have I an alternator fault or something else?? Its a 2.5TD

It sounds like the diodes in the alternator u/s, power leaking to earth through the alternator when engine not running. Need to get it fixed asap as can sod up battery.

In my case it was bad main wire between alternator output and battery. Needed to be replaced, then proper operation was fully restored. Perversely charge light always worked normally, just that half the time the batt wasn't charging properly. Couple of times car nearly stranded running on batt alone, then wiring recovered and got alternator output again. (Presumably Voltage difference got so large that the bad connection was bridged then kept working. Until the next time.)

Rotor was blown and rectifier gone! Recon fitted £135.00 Just waiting for warm weather to get radio screen back on to enter code.

Just a thought. Is there any sign of power steering fluid leaking from the pipe from the reservoir?. This is a known issue and IF it gets on the alternator it does it no good!!
