Sunroof glass

Sunroof has suffered from swelling of the seal (rust underneath) round the glass. It will tilt but will not close properly -has to be pushed to seat properly and will not slide (it tries!). Is it possible to remove the glass in the tilted position ?

You should read This article and check out the other relevant buttons on the left of the page. The Closures Manual being one of them.

Thanks Simmo, I had read those but they describe removal of the whole sunroof mechanism. I seem to remember some discussion at one time about this and I seem to remember a post which stated that the glass could be removed on its own but can't find it at present and the exploded diagram is not clear enough to show the fixing properly.

Get hold of a Haynes manual for the Mk3 Granada which details sunroof removal - it should be exactly the same Cheap as chips on ebay I would think

Mike. I have that manual and the procedure listed is exactly the same as on this site. In essence you have to fully open the roof, release the screws and then close the roof and, with help, push the whole frame up and out. Sun roof

There are three screws down each side of the sunroof, can been seen when the roof is tilted. They are little bas---ds to undo, the nuts go round in the plastic, but I did change the sunroof on the granada scorp that way.

Thanks folks-as usual with the scorp , no easy answer. a900one, can you remember exactly what these screws hold? What I would like to do ideally is renew the seal after de-rusting whatever carrier it is in because it is the "swollen" seal which is preventing it's operation.

Just the glass and steel frame. Good luck with the de-rusting, my sunroof was falling apart when I took it out . The roof on the scorpio swelled a couple of years ago, stopped it working and stripped the plastic gear. I put a sheet over the front seats and with the roof in the tilt position, used a rubber mallet to hit the seal and got a LOT of rust out. Checked it would go back and forth, with a handle from a mondeo, before fitting another motor from 5Stud. The scorpio will need a new sunroof at some stage.

I found on mine the joint where the ends of the seal meet at the back was snagging on the roof hole, being slightly proud, lubricate it with Vaseline or somesuch then it would go through. Could buff it back a bit with sandpaper?

Yes Mike that's the worst bit on mine too, although it seems a bit proud on the corners too. I was wondering about trying to peel the seal back a bit and de-rust the metal frame which I presume is the root of the problem. Glyn

If you have a scrapyard near you why not go there and try to take one off a mondeo, saves wrecking yours.
