Hello. I have a scorpio estate 1996, 2.3i DOHC. Somethimes it wont start. This is very random, there is no spark on the spark plugs when it wont start. Things i have bought and replaced are: spark plugs, lamda sensor, crankshaft sensor, air mass sensor and changed fuel filter. I dont have OBD in the car offcourse. Sad Anyone know what could be the problem. The car runs fine when it works btw. PLEASE HELP!

Have you checked all the wiring to the coils and plugs? they do tend to loose the insulation and thus short on eachother. Also is it all the plugs that loose the spark? it could be a coilpack.

Hi.
Yes i have checked all the wiring and fixed missing insulation. And tested for sparks on both coils, no sparks when it wont start. But sometimes it suddenly starts and runs fine.
Thnx for reply btw. Smiley

Yes partially. I have checked the fuses and replaced the sensors. Can it be the ignition back piece? cause earlier ive got this problem where the car didnt shut off when i turned the keys. Then it was the ignition back piece. But it worked after I jiggled the cables. Smiley

I would think that is the problem then maybe the wires are damaged or there is a bad connection or worst scenario the unit is damaged

The engine will crank even if the ECU has no power supply, as I once found out when I left a lead off when changing the battery.

UPDATE: IT STARTED! Fixed a couple of cables between the coils and then it started without a problem. Then it runned smoothly for a couple of days. Then suddenly it wont start again. Now im going over ALL bad wiring in the engine and hoping this will fix it. Strange this random behaviour.. Suggestions?  Undecided

Well you need to check all the loom wiring in the engine bay as the dampness will get in and can cause this. I wonder if replacing as much of it as possible would be a good idea or go through the process you have just done all over again lol.

Only just read this.    I had the same problem, a while ago.   Fortunately I had a brand-new 2.0 ltr shut-off-loom, and changed the connectors and re-wired where needed the difference between 2.3 and 2.0.   Once in place the car started first-time and has never failed since.   All wires now shrink-wrapped.    I had a good look at the wires I replaced, they were in awfull condition right down to the crank-sensor, all brittle and flakey with the wires going brown with rust in places, I don't know how the car had been running so long!
