Have a dodgy fuel guage that drops very quickly and is on empty when there should still be about 35ltrs left - I'm assuming its the sender unit - can they just be bent back to correct this or will it require a new one? - anything else to look out for?

Rob,

I gotta be honest that I've not done a Scorpio, but on most other similar era Ford products the sender unit is a conductive carbon track with a metal wiper (a bit like a variable resistor) and if you can test the sender, its resistance should be quite linear along its travel.

Yes, it could possibly be suffering from dirty connections on the resistor wafer, most of them are open so you may be able to clean it and possibly bend the wiper contact a bit so it makes good contact.

I'm not 100% sure whether zero resistance means full tank but I remember that it did, so in that case a bad or open circuit at the sender could make the fuel gauge think the tank's empty.

Maybe a new one would be a better plan (I don't know how much Ford charge but I'm guessing it's a King's ransom Wink) so before going that route I'd check it's not a wiring problem elsewhere in the sender circuit.

Hope this helps.

Yes Mike it,s all in one expensive lump, and unlike other makes there is no access cover in the boot floor necessitating tank removal.
I will refrain from a shed comment on this occasion  Grin
