Hi guys, I have owned my Scorpio for many years, but it has been laid up in my garage for the last ten or so years. I have made a start on it this week with a view to getting it roadworthy again. First of my many questions.....can I take the sump off a 2.9 12v engine without taking the whole engine out? Many thanks in advance Chris.

Probably can be done but you might have to support the engine from above and drop the crossmember. Use a support bar across the inner wing rails and strong chains if you do this. Why do you want to take the sump off ? Haynes didn't do a workshop manual for the Scorpio but the manual for the Mk3 Granada may be useful for mechanical type things. You should be able to find a used manual on ebay for a few £'s.

Thanks Mike, When I last ran the car I noticed that the oil had turned to a jelly type substance (temp guage always read ok, but looks like it cooked) I have refilled with fresh oil and after all these years it seems to run ok on the very short test I gave it. I want to get the sump off to clean inside it and clean the pickup gauze to get rid of any of the jellied oil left. I would also like to clean through the oil channels and the top end oil feeder pipes. I thought that the engine was a write off as it was running so poorly....I now have a little hope that I can save it. Then it will be... Windscreen New proper size wheels (Mondeo at the moment) Brakes Underside surface rust from storage sorted....hope it is just surface rust. Repair wing where I caught the garage wall when it slipped as I was pushing it into the garage the other day. Then I hope to be back behind the wheel of the old girl Thanks Chris.

Hi guys, I am going to give it an engine flush or two first before I start lifting the engine. My dipstick handle has snapped off so I can't reach the stick, firstly can I unbolt the tube that holds the dipstick in order to get it out and secondly how much oil does my 2.9 12v v6 engine take Thanks for your help in advance chaps, Chris. Oh one more Q....What system is used to lubricate my tappets (I would like to clean it through if it is a oil feeder rail) Cheers again.

Chris if you click on the ford scorpio at the top of the page it will take you to the information page where with a bit of navigation you can find everything about the scorpio and how to fix things on them.

Thanks for the pointers guys, so it looks like it takes 4.8 litres of oil and it has hydraulic tappets so can't see a oil feeder running along inside the rocker cover. Can't see any info about the dipstick tube removal but will have a look when I next go up to my garage. Many thanks to all Chris.

I think the dipstick tube is just a tight push-fit into the engine block - take care as the tube is easily bent. If you do take the sump off you could probably just push it back up ? What about using a piece of wire like a coat hanger to try and fish it back up ? Might be worth taking the rocker assemblies off and cleaning them out - they can get gunged up & also check the oil way up to the rockers is clear - I've had this block up on a 2.8 many years ago. Get hold of a Mk3 Granada Haynes manual which covers the 2.9 12v Cheap as chips on ebay.

The Dip stick is located at the front of the engine on the RH side when looking in at the engine on the 12v. The tube for the dip stick has a small bracket to hold it and when unbolted the tube can then be removed quite easily.

Many thanks for the info guys, I should be able to get it all done at the weekend then pull it out of the garage under its own steam (if the autobox is still working)

Just noticed in my Mk3 Granada Haynes manual that the V6 engine in section 1 is the older 2.8 ! The 2.9 is covered in section 13...
