Does anyone know what the rumbling noise coming from my front brakes is when I reverse on my 2.3 Scorpio?

Check caliper to knuckle mounting bolts are not loose.

Best to just take the wheel off and have a good look - could be many things.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I've checked the bolts they're all ok. The only thing I can think of is to replace the brake pad carriers.

Have you changed the pads recently?. Jonnycab had no end of grief with some make of pads which seemed to 'slop about' in the carrier and thus clank about. Huh

It only does it when I reverse for some bizarre reason.

I'm hazarding a guess here but are they a reputable make of pad?. I'm sure Jon had something similar and did what you have done. It seems to be down to the machining of the pad and the tolerances. He only posts occasionally now. Try a PM and see if he picks that up.

You could try the ford ones:

Mine’s made a sort of moaning noise in reverse for years- it doesn’t always do it, sometimes you can feel it through the steering. Mainly happens with a bit of right lock. I’ve changed most bushes etc & of course discs & pads over the years but the noise remains.

Good news. Perhaps bears out the theory that it's the machining of the cheaper pads which may not be quite up to the tolerances of the more expensive ones.  Smiley Thank you for letting us know. Wink

It was a while ago, but I seem to remember that a set of Mintex pads did improve matters somewhat...although not completely.
The noise did finally disappear after a couple of thousand miles though....probably due to a build up of general road filth around the pads & carriers.
I still believe that (at the time, but maybe not now) for some unknown reason, some (or most) pattern pads were manufactured to the wrong spec........computer glitch ?  Undecided

Good to see you are still popping in Jon. You'll see I mentioned you early on in this thread. Bit like the streering rack(s).  Roll Eyes

The caliper piston looked a bit on the squint too. When I took the old pads off the bottom of the pad was completely untouched. I work at a motor factors, so I'll get them reconditioned I think.
