put the engine back in and doesnt run well from cold and idle is poor stalling (although better on LPG?) - suspect air leak somewhere but is there anything else I should look for? - did about 20 miles in it yesterday and doing about 100 today - started today but keeps stalling when cold

If you suspect an air leak, first place I would check is that the gasket under the plenum chamber is fitted correctly.
I had poor running problems on a 2.8i a few years back and found the gasket had somehow 'moved' during the fitting of the plenum chamber.

Check the vacuum pipe on the underside of the TPS it can come off and cause the symptoms you describe.
