Heater-Blower again

Well, here we are again with this problem.   I've had a good look at the wires, all tests-out ok, so I'm thinking that the 'buck-shee' one I got from a colleague is faulty as well.

Is there a fix?   Also the dealer calls it a 'resistor'.   Wiggling the top-wire fixing where it mounts onto the resistor makes it work for a short while, then it's intermittent.

Also, there's a little diaphram/drum thingy that site just the drivers-side of this 'resistor' unter the bonnet, it's very rusty and has a wee hole in it!   Could that be affecting my problem?   What is this bit for anyway?

Peter. the 'diaphram/drum thingy" is explained by Tompion , who else ?!  GrinHere Smiley

There is a proper test procedure for the HBC. The Link is highlighted in blue in This article which you may also find useful. Smiley

As you say wiggling it makes it work for a while check the contacts in the connector haven’t been opened by a test probe, I’ve had intermittent problems caused by this, the contacts should be touching or have a very small gap.

Thanks very much guys, I'll do the checks the morra.   I still reckon I'll need another HBC mind you.

Yes Tomp, I checked the wee connector, and in fact suspected it so changed it!   No difference.

Up-Date.   A lot of b****ring about but maybe solved.

I originally suspected that the whole unit was knacked, so I asked on here for one, and got one from a kind member.   I fitted this 'new-one' from the member and it worked for a short while.   Then when it stopped working again I checked all the wiring and found that the top connector just wasn't quite 100%.   I cut the wires back and put a fresh connector in place, this made no-difference.   However, this morning I re-installed the original HBC, and so-far all is well.   With the 'new-one' when wiggling the unit or wires it stopped and started, the same as the original.   Now with the original in place and the replaced top connector, when wiggled, all is still well.   So I'm hoping the original problem was the top connector, then I got a slightly faulty unit.

The saga continues!

Well, it's still very occasionally dropping-out.   No where near as often as before, maybe once every Ten minutes or so, probably more frequent as the journey progresses.   I've checked the fuse, it's fine.   In the manual it mentions a relay, and apparently behind the glove-box, I see no 'Yellow' relay there, only a blue one.   Continuing problem!   Spikey's has a spare for £75, no-way am I spending that much on something that might only last a wee-while.

Up-Date.   One thing I noticed when I was re-calibrating using the procedure where you hold-down the 're-circulating' and 'A/C' buttons on for 10 plus seconds.   Instead of it going back to '00'  it returns to '57'.   Now I know there isn't a '57' in the fault-codes, but the '07' indicates a problem with HBC right enough?   So I'm still presuming that's where the fault lies.   The only difference now from the very beginning is that no-matter how much I 'wiggle' the wires or the HBC whilst it's all mounted, it makes no-difference to the situation when the blower is working.   I'm just about to go do a few electrical tests as suggested above.   I'll be back on later!!   Much to the 'Gals' dismay!!

Further.   I've done all of the electrical tests associated with the HBC, and found that generally speaking it seems ok although the readings are 12V max, 9V middle, and 10.5V Min !   The last reading seems a bit out maybe.   The wires to the HBC are all good readings.   It does seem to work ok for the first part of a journey, and when the car is sitting in the drive, but when the car is out on the road and gets warm, it progressively gets worse dropping out more often and for longer periods.   This would suggest to me that the last option is correct, the resistor is 'breaking-down'.   I have another great friend on here donating yet another HBC.   I can only wait and see what this brings.   One thing I have noticed, which would support my thought on both of the HBC's I have being faulty, they aren't behaving the same, the replacement one breaks-down much more quickly and stays off for longer.   Time will tell.

I’m pretty sure from experiments I did that the 5 is really an S for stored codes whereas 0* are live codes.
Does yours have 1 or 2 wires to the top plug, some only have 1.
One of the HBC’s I had would play up without an extra loom which simply connected the wires together on the top plug and fed them to one pin. I think I have details of it somewhere but probably on another computer.

Hi Peter

Sadly I didn't think to grab the HBC & loom before my car was carted off.
I posted a bit here but that doesn't say which pin to use:
