Clicking noise behind dash on 1995 Cosworth
« on: Apr 11th, 2015, 11:43am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

I have had a ticking/clicking noise coming from behind the dash - instrument cluster since i bought the car a year ago.
The noise can be heard at speeds from approximately 15 mph and up. It increases in frequency with speed and the sound reminds me of a relay switching on-off.
However if I lay my foot on the brake pedal the sound goes away until I lift my foot of the pedal. I don't actually have to apply the brakes, its just enough to depress the pedal a few millimeters, maybe to light up the brake lights?
The instruments "ain't misbehaving" I just have the ABS/Traction lights come on when I reach the wheel sensor speed check point, and besides the noise was there long before the lights came on.

I'm including the rather longish trouble code scan but judging from that the car should be ready for the scrap heap...
It however drives/behaves perfect apart from the ticking and ABS/Traction control lights and it just passed our equivalent of the MOT the other day.

Attempted to make a recording of the sound, and the nise can be heard, albeit not to clearly since there is a fair bit of road noise and rumble from the tires.
Copy-paste this link in your browser and you should be able to hear it, (Its only 30 sec in duration).

Relay 37 (speed control system) is behind the glovebox. Just a guess but I assume as you say it stops when you touch the brake pedal the switch on the pedal needs relocating – presumably it’s making/breaking causing the relay to cut in/out.

Unless you have issues with windows, doors, seats & alarm you may as well ignore the B (body codes) for now.
I always have a decklid code & 2 other alarm codes – I assume it’s to do with the alarm not going off when you open the boot with the remote or key when the alarm is set.

C1095 is the cause of your ABS light coming on & quite likely a faulty solder joint in the controller.

The Spout & Saw codes are all to do with ignition/timing could be wiring to/from the EDIS or crank position sensor the shielded cables are a known problem area however if you’ve not had any misfiring etc it’s possible a lot of the codes were generated if you’ve had low battery voltage & they may be old anyway.
Best bet is to clear the codes & see what returns.

Did your scanner correctly identify the car as you can get misleading results otherwise.

Thank you for the hints. I will check relay 37 during the week and hopefully that will take care of the problems. I have found the article about the ABS solder joint, but I'm wondering if it couldn't be a whell sensor that's acting up since the lights com on at aprox 15 mph. The self diagnose on start up runs OK.

Car is running fine but the battery might be on the way out. Starts fine but I did a "load" test on the battery and its a bit week.

I have tried the cleaning the codes but they do reappear.  I'll try with a new battery before a I do something drastic...

What scanner are you using? The reason I asked earlier if the car was correctly indentified is that some of the codes I wouldn’t expect to be returned with a Scorpio, notably “Code: B2212 - Panel Dim Switch Out of Range”.

I believe the brake switch can get dislodged so it might be worth checking that before looking at the relay.

Wheel sensor faults don’t generate C1095 codes. The pump gets tested as part of the rolling test.

If you’re using the Forscan software it has a test that runs the ABS pump but I’ve not tested it on a system with a faulty controller.

I just tried mine with the latest Forscan software version just in case there was a problem with the software.
It worked fine with one P code (from when I ran it with the cam sensor disconnected a couple of weeks ago) & the 2 B codes I always get.

When I cleared the codes it returned P1000 (OBD system readiness not complete) which is normal & will clear once driven and a drive cycle is completed.
I assume you had the same, if not you may have just cleared the log & not reset the DTC's using the yellow triangle at the bottom of the DTC tab.

Well I have been mucking about with the brake light switch and everything looked fine there so relays and such are next on the agenda.
After using the yellow triangle I now only have the 1095 code left and that will as you all know involve some surgery of the ABS unit. Next week perhaps...

Some progress to report:
After tearing down half the dashboard, and the some, without finding the source of the noise we had a spot of nice and sunny weather and I was motoring along with the drivers side window down, and lo and behold; I could, loud and clear, hear the very same noise 10 fold stronger coming from the left front wheel... Evidently the sound transmits it self along the steering column in to the drivers compartment driving the driver bonkers.
Had the wheel of for a quick look but couldn't see anything amiss.
When my hurting back permits me I will make a more thorough investigation but I'm thinking the the friction material on one of the pads might have separated from the backing plate allowing it to move around somewhat until I apply the brakes.
I'll keep you posted...

Similar problem in the past but clicking was not from the dash area but from the rear(with the window down). Disappeared on touching the brakes, even lightly.
Turned out to be a failing wheel bearing ,which was not obvious even though I thought of it, there was no play when jacked up, but the hand brake must have stabilised it (I obviously was not strong enough!)
When it gave way finally it almost demolished the bearing, fortunately nothing else.
Couple of years later a similar sound (bells rang, flashing lights etc.) Sure enough it was a wheel bearing!
Good luck!

At long last!
I've had lumbar surgery twice this summer and haven't been able to do anything about this until now... and indeed the problem turned out to be a bad left front wheel bearing as suggested by Glyn
