1989 24v cosworth. Lost my reverse gear and in drive it is noisy.
On reversing it seemed to slip then went in with a bang suddenly and it was extremely noisy as if something had broken, I was able to drive home and you could hear the auto was noisy in drive, tried to reverse into my drive but had lost the reverse altogether!
Can anyone advise a good auto mechanic I am in Romford Essex Cry

Sad Have a read of This Fault Finder page. Scroll down to Auto Gearbox. You need to check the gearbox oil first but it doesn't sound good.  Sad Sad. I'm afraid I can't help re a mechanic.

Update. Google came up with This. M and M even offer a free test? Wink

Thank you Paul. It is always useful to get feedback, good or bad, as it may well help others in the future. Reading the fault page it does seem as though a quick check of the oil may give you an idea the colour of the oil being the crucial thing. The level is also critical and there is a set procedure for checking it contained in This article on the auto box together with other tips.Good luck. Smiley

Hallo again, M & M Transmissions quoted to remove, fit and do a complete rebuild would charge £1790 +VAT.  I then made a call Steve (Spikie's Scorpios) and he had a box that just came in for £245 or £750 supply and fit, to double check I then called M&M for a fit and that would have been £400 +VAT so I will be putting the car into Steve's garage on Thursday.  There are other garages that would only do a complete rebuild but at similar prices to M&M's.
Will keep you posted, regards Paul

There is no-one I know better in the UK for Auto-boxes than Dave2302 on here.   He's retired in his early 50's I think on the money he's made as an Auto-'Box specialist, (which should tell us how good he is)   He does a RE-BUILD.    Most people do a RE-CONDITION, a real big difference.   Dave did my 'Box a few years ago and it still performs exactly as it did when I got the car back from him after a day in his workshop.   Only problem is he's North-Scotland like me!   I won't go into prices, because it was a long time ago now, what I would say is, be careful of something that seems a bargain with an Auto-'Box.   Again, it would be interesting to hear how you got on, even a long-time after the event.   I hope everything goes well for you.

Thank you everybody for your response, if Dave2302 moved down to London he would be kept very busy in his retirement.
I have had the Automatic fitted that Steve (Spikeys Scorpios) has supplied and fitted and it is running very well.
I have had another quotation from J.T.Automatics at Erith, Kent. Who on the face of it seem very competent, for a re-build and re-fit for £995 + VAT
Kind regards Paul

Don't touch JT with a barge pole unless you want a pile of old secondhand sh!te fitted in your box !!

I used to regularly get to see their work when it had all gone wrong.............Horror stories  Sad

If you want a decent firm in that area, ring Tony at Dartford Transmissions  Wink

Sounds like the rear band was broken in your box, so a complete strip and rebuild needed.

HTH

Dave

PS I was very busy when I was in that area, that's why I am now semi retired up here and playing with rally cars LOL

Dave there are some cobwebby steel rims here for you  Wink  Regarding Paul's autobox I presume that fitters/repairers will be aware that the Cossy version is upgraded to stand the thrashing, and don't flog him a standard box  Shocked
