Check the multi-plug which connects to the indicator stalk for corroded or loose connection, also could be a faulty stalk. Probably have a spare if you need one...

Hi Mike, Sorry its taken so long to get back to you, but it has been raining here in France for two days solid (no garage) Been out and checked all the connections all seem clean and ok, BUT when I went to start her up the whole car is totally dead, no lights nothing, tried charging battery still nothing, put a test lamp across battery, bulb lit up ok. Battery is only 18 months old. Any ideas ? Cheers BOB

It would appear you have a short somewhere which is draining the battery. The mention of rain for two days rings alarm bells in respect of the fuseboxes which might account for your issues. Do you have a battery cover fitted, is there any sign of water in the passenger footwell and are the drain holes in the bulkhead near both fuseboxes clear of debris and water? Check this out and get back to us ASAP.

Hi Simmo, Thanks for the quick reply, I have checked both fuse boxes and both are dry, I have a battery cover fitted, and there is no water in the footwell. I am at a loss as she was running great before the indicators went off

It's too much of a coincidence that the indicators don't work and then it all goes dead. There has to be a short somewhere. Can you 'jump start' it to see if the battery has failed? It can and does happen without warning if a cell goes down. The other thing to do is to put a multimeter across the various fuses and see if there is a current drain with everything switched off. I'd start with anything to do with the indicators. Make sure the doors are shut and the radio off etc to avoid any false readings. IF your battery is not fully charged there may not be enough power in it to start the car BUT there may be enough to let you check for current drain. These cars need a lot of power to start hence the large capacity battery required.

Thanks Simmo Will check that out and get back to you, it is weird as it just seems as though there is no battery fitted when you turn the key. Bob

Then there is clearly a short somewhere as current is bypassing the ignition circuit. Thinking along those lines the indicators would require the ignition to be on in order to work normally whereas using the Hazard switch would not? The proximity of the indicator stalk to the ignition switch might also indicate the problem lies in that area? I'd bet this is to do with the ignition switch or the wiring to it. Have you had the steering column cowl off?

If you have disconnected & removed the battery for any reason double check you have got all the cables connected back up correctly - there is a thin wire which can be easily missed. Also, if you have had the big multi plug connector off the main fusebox for any reason make sure it is correctly fitted - very easy to plug it back on with it being a row of pins out...I know, I've done it...and strange things happen.

hi guys, Well what a day, my neighbour came round in his tractor to jump start car, it worked car started straight away. Took it down to local garage and they checked battery and alternator, both a1. I will see if it starts in the morning ? Still have no indicators, could it be the indicator lever unit or the relay under the switch which is black no R29. cheers Bob

If the battery is drained again in the morning you will know there is a short. Either of the units you mention could be the cause.

OK Bob. You will see from Spikies site that there are two types. One with the radio control and one without. Not being familiar with the Ghia perhaps you'd better make it clear which one you want and perhaps post in Parts Wanted?.
