dodgy wiring

When I start my 2.0 16V from cold the revs drop and the engine immediately dies. If I keep the revs up with the accelerator for about a minute, the engine just about stays on although its idling about 250 Rpm. Having a poke around under the bonnet revealed the wires to the injectors (I think are for this anyway) have rotted and only one is connected. See picture. Can anyone tell me if the two connections to the plug have different functions? I am assuming if it was like a normal electrical connection with a live and neutral, it would not work at all with one wire off. What are my options to get it sorted quickly? Many thanks in advance Tony

I could be wrong but that looks like the connector for the Idle Air Control valve - which might explain the idling problem - with 1 wire broken it isn't working, may also be shorting given the lack of insulation. I think you can get replacement connectors from a company called Vehicle Wiring Products.

| My guess is that it isn't working - which is why your engine is having problems with poor idling - assuming that it is indeed the Idle Air control valve ( IAC ).

It would be a straight forward repair given its location. I recently replaced the plug on my crank sensor. Can you solder?

No need to solder, just to get it working. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST!! Cut off the connector you have and make a note of the single remaining wire's colour and the position it takes in the connector (take a photo). Cut back the wires on the car as far as you need to to have 2 good wires and strip the ends so that you have about a centimetre of bare copper on each wire. Take the connector to your local scrap yard and hunt around the fords (or if the yard has become a**l about safety ask them to) until you find the same connector (they are fairly common) and cut it off the car with around 6 inches of wire. (Making sure the wires are securely fixed to the connector of course). (Like the mix of metric and imperial? lol!) Alternatively you could try an auto electrician and ask them for the same connector made up with around 6 inches of wire. You could ask him to use the same colour wires that already exist (in the same position!!) Take your new connector and wires back to the car. Try the connector and make sure it fits the idle air control valve. Take the wire that is in the same position as the single wire of your original connector and bare about a centimetre of the end of that wire. Twist that wire together with the wire in the car that was connected to your old connector, until you cut it off. They may possibly be different colours but that doesn't matter. Tape the bare wire up with PVC tape. Do the same with the other wire and tape that up too. Hopefully that will get you mobile and then you can drive to your local auto electrician and ask them to solder the 2 wires together for a "proper job" Good luck, Graham

You will have problems with all you connectors. At the end, you end up with the crankshaft position sensor, because that you cannot reach the wire gets hot and cracks (red, red-white) probably because of the high current and resistance. This is how a properly finished job should look like: https://www.dropbox.com/s/p5xnncsi8hqg8fz/IMG-20160226-WA0002.jpeg?dl=0
