Climate control/ Air con problem

1995 24v ultima. For the past 2 weeks I have had problems with the cc. First noticed on the last hot day we had, driving along and noticed that the temp of the air from the vent which had been 9degC (I have a temp sensor in the vent) started to climb to 25 (nearly the outside temp). When I hit the slow moving traffic off the Mway the coolant temp began to rise up to the top of the normal range and then the fans cut in for a short time to bring the temp down a little After a while the air con started again and coolant temp returned to normal. This has happened several times with the A/C light going out each time. Now it happens with the A/C light on. Putting the car on the scanner the fans obey the low speed and high speed signals. If the aircon is working the fans run on low speed and all is well but the aircon will not respond to pressing the A/C button, although the light goes out,the aircon stays working and only stops with the fan control in the off position. With this the slow speed fans come on at about 102degG and high speed about 105. Climate control reset makes no difference Anyone any ideas ?

Could be the aircon low on gas, needs a recharge or a service.
