screen wiper malfunction
« on: Oct 30th, 2016, 6:07pm »

my 1998 R reg diesel estate is mercifully devoid of arnitel wiring and normally behaves impeccably but now despite no car washing or rain the wipers have started intermittent wipe mode when in the off position --fast wipe  and normal speed wipe function ok as do intermittent and reverse wipe and rear intermittent but i cant get
them to stop when in the off position--it cant be a flooded fuse box --no rain  but somehow power is getting to the intermittent relay when it should be isolated---is there a known malfunction in the switch that happens  --any clues?? --i forgot to say they stop when the ignition is off

Does it 'adjust' if you turn the wee switch to a different number?   If it does the switch needs replacing.   If you don't have the wee turn thingy for adjusting the time-delay, then wiggle it front-to-back, and see if it stops.   If it stops it's the switch again.   If it doesn't stop, I would be thinking there's a wire problem to the relay.

changing the thingy to a different number simply alters the frequency as though it was set for time delay --no amount of wiggling it between 1 and 6 eliminates it wiping again after a delay i even checked the wash wipe button hadnt stuck but again that all responded as normal--i suppose its possible the relay may have stuck on but i think they normally fail in the off mode--i have a spare switch but reluctant to remove steering wheel and the airbag unless absolutely necessary to avoid the hassle of warning lights that inevitably start coming on until the clockspring decides its happy after umpteen repositionings--yes mot is due this month--not sure if the intermittent was wipe is a failure or not --i know an
airbag warning light is

Can you just wire it up to see if its the switch, not fit it as such Undecided.

Bernard, how about removing the intermittent wiper relay, which is number 2 in the main,(drivers side) fuse box? The rear intermittent wiper is controlled by a separate relay situated near the steering column.
Please let us know how you get on as I can't recall seeing this particular issue on here previously. Good luck.

i tried replacing the r2 relay which didnt solve the problem --the relay is curious in that it has an upper and a lower part -i only changed the upper as the lower part resisted being removed ==my spare has tangs that are designed to keep it in place so i left well alone as i suspect it is a conversion adapter with different slots to the upper relay with probably no working parts --anyway i solved the dilemna by removing the relay =all is now well -i seldom used the intermittent feature anyway-every thing else works ok

bit more info--two unexpected side effects with the intermittent wipe relay removed --wipers work pefectly when turned on but no longer self park when switched off ---secondly with wiper switch in off position rear wiper works when reverse is engaged----i guess this is all pointing to the switchbeing defective---ive got one somewhere --its on my to do list after MOT is out of the way

The self park switch is within the wiper motor assembly &  that appears to be controlled by the relay so not parking is probably what you'd expect without the relay.

Intermittent wipe is controlled by the central timer, are other timer functions working correctly such as interior lights off after a few seconds.

A faulty switch or connection looks the most likely.

All the best with the MOT

Yeah - estate and salon switches are different as salons don't have a rear wiper.

My saloon has an estate wiper switch. As it was one of the last ones, that was more than likely what was left in the bin  Grin

Talk about a coincidence..... One of my Scorpios has the exact same fault as this one..... think I need to change the switch and or investigate the wiring.

Just my luck that the Scorpio with wiper problems is not the one that is off the road due to the hit and run parking incident today.

Sorry to hear the above, there seems to be so many scumbags around doing that.  I tend to use the scorp less just in case that happens to me

i got the right switch ok and finally got roundto removing the steering wheel and airbag to fit the replacement switch and lo and behold with the relay plugged back in the fusebox wiper functions back to normal then a pidgeon pooed on the screen so i pressed the washer button and nothing happened --yes i checked there is fluid in the bottle--now the switch only has one multiplug so i know i got that right so now i think i have a switch with another defect---the fuze to the washer bottle is the same one that feeds the wipers so its not a fuse and i cant see any mention of a relay for the washers so maybe its coincidental to the washer pump failing at that precise moment but this saga is to be continued
