Top radiator hose split now gearbox problem.

Yesterday the top hose split as I was driving up a hill. I was able to pull in in a very short time, so no over heating. I called out the RAC who did a good job and got me going again.
The car ran fine all the gears and no problems at all and I did app 40 milles.
This morning I decided to rince down the front of the engine to get rid of the antifreeze/water that was there. I then went for a drive to dry it out. That is when the trouble started, it goes up through the gears 1 and 2 but it keeps loosing drive when going into 3rd, the engine reves then it bangs into gear, and no 4th. If you put your foot hard down it will go up with out loosing drive but still no 4th. Water must have got in some where, either when the hose bust or I washed it down, only a gentle spray with hose. Checked oils and all ok. As this is a 98 cosworh I think it wont have the bad wireing but some wires dont look perfect.

Just had another look and the two square plugs on the driverside inner wing look very wet, if I undo the bolt on the top will they come apart. And are they to do with the wiring loom for the gearbox.

Yes, very much so. Suggest you undo them and dry them out with a hair-dryer.

Make sure the rubber seal (usually red) stays in place in the socket especially if you use an airline to dry it.

Checked this morning and not that wet, looks more like wd 40 type stuff. The pins on the plugs, some look like copper but the others look different a bit dull looking. A wire has lost its insulation in one plug, put a bit on it, and a couple seem to be cracked, not to bad though. Not tried it yet but I think it will be the same.

A few pins are gold plated, the others are as you say dull looking.

Having a look for cooling system spec I found this  http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/karcher.htm  I wish I had seen it before Huh.  I think I will repack the big plugs on o/s inner wing with the grease, unless some one thinks otherwise.
