Cosworth Sump Oil Leak

Dropped the undertray the other day in prep for doing an oil/filter change before using the car, fair bit of tarry gunk on inside of tray, and a liberal but not excessive amount of oil coating everything above. Gave it all a good gunk and wash off and everything down there came up nice and clean (and at least one of the PO invoices was correct it does have have nearly new rack). So first thing this morning went to friends ramp to do oil change and could see trickles of oil down edges of sump, trickles may be exaggeration but nice smear of fresh oil on all sides. Put a small socket on and discovered most sump bolts only finger tight with socket on extension rod (no ratchet) so have nipped up tight with a 4" ratchet. Will leave undertray off for a bit and see if its cured.

Have been keeping an eye on this when its been on the ramps for odd things over the last month and all seemed well but low short mileage. Had good 300 mile run last weekend, so had a good look today before refitting under tray which I had left off. As far as I can tell now as dry as one can expect, so looks like just sloppy sump refitting at some point, or the bolts do slacken a bit in use. From the amount of grunge on the undertray it had been doing for a long time, maybe since it had a rebuilt engine about 6-7 years ago. Alan
