Electric Door Mirror Control.

My 1995 12v Ultima has a fault with control of the passenger door mirror.
The mirror control moves the mirror to it's outward limit no matter how you try to adjust it(up ,down or sideways)
In addition on reverse the mirror only goes sideways not down and does not return.
Does anyone know whether it is the module in the passenger door which controls it or is it the one in the driver's door.
Had aux . fuse box replaced recently but everything else seems to work ok.

The first thing to check is the connector which carries the cables from the loom into the door.

Connector seems ok. Having studied the wiring diagrams it would seem that the control of the mirror depends on
1 The driver door module
2 The passenger door module
3 The seat/mirror memory switch
4 The central control module
5 The position of the PRND selector
6 And last but not least, the mirror motors which have sensors to recognize what position the mirrors are in.
Nothing simple on the Scorpio !

Glynn. Check out the connectors to the drivers seat. It has been known for rear seat passengers feet or other articles to disturb the wiring under the seat.

Did you do a continuity check between the 2 connectors on the cable which runs through the A pillar into the door ?
The cable is flexed every time the door is opened or closed and it is not unknown for internal breaks or shorts to occur here.
Might be worth checking the cables on the driver side door for breaks as this side will get flexed more frequently and the drivers door module seems to be the one which controls the passenger side door mirror.

There are 2 mirror connectors behind the passenger door card. People who don't like the dip on reverse disconnect the black plug - all other functions still work via the white plug. You could try doing that in case it's a problem with that function.
There's a flap in the door lining to get at them. the leads are quite short so checking the white one is properly latched is worth a try. If you have a spare mirror you could try plugging that in while you're at it.

Thank you all for your suggestions, all of which will be worked through in due course.
As I have a wreck for spares I had intended to start with the mirror, plugging in the spare one(once I remove it).
Then I can check the plugs and if no joy try the module , then the wiring to the door pillars and then the driver's door module.
Obviously I will follow Simmo's advice and check under the seat before anything else as that's the easiest and thanks Simmo for reminding me about that, I had forgotten!
Thanks all for your inputs and I will report how I get on whether good or bad.

Well, finally solved the problem.
It appears to be the passenger door module which had gone faulty.
Changed it for a spare one and all functions fully restored.
Thanks to all for suggestions
Interestingly the replacement was said to come from a '97 model but the module carried an inspection sticker dated '95 so the dipping mirror on reverse was possibly programmed in early on.

Coincidentally I never had dipping mirror on my M reg (jan 95 build) until I upgraded the front seats to both all electric pinched from a P reg Ultima. Not thinking about it just went to start up and reverse off the ramp and the left mirror dipped and has done so since without fail, is there a possible connection between this, as the wiring has changed over time and had to be adapted (safely) by my main spanner man, but only so far as comprehensively using only the bits attached to the 2 sets of seats.
Still can't revive the one touch closing on the drivers window though, had it once but after coming back from the bodyshop it hasn't worked since. Have tried all combinations to no avail

When you replaced the seats did you have to install the seat memory switch?
Has anyone got mirror dipping on reverse on a car without electric seats?

Hi Glyn, When we swapped the seats it was an upgrade as the passenger seat was same as ghia spec with only heated seat, but all the electrics came with the later seat and the facility was there to use later bits from the seats, combined with the '95 spec wiring - nothing was added just Rupert moved all the bits around and - "presto" it all worked.
The main difference was seatbelt tensioners as they had an electric prompt on the lated seats whereas the early one were just gas powered (on impact I suppose).
Haven't touched door modules etc as beyond me 
Anyway the power is out through Black 12 spokes now (thank ypou PJ) as the Michelins disintegrated - worrying that
