Keys

Hi, I have had a search through the old posts on this but still not sure. I have one black key with my car, and a fob that, despite changing the batteries, only works occasionally when operated near the o/s rear pillar. I have no red key.
If I take my existing key along to Timpsons or a similar independent, should they be able to sort out a spare key for me, or will I need to contact a specialist?
I am guessing that I would need a specialist if I wanted the remote locking to work again.
Thanks in advance

I think the ones that operate at Sainsburys (Paignton) possibly is Timpsons can do the chip copying for you dont go to ford unless you have a Branson type wallet!

The late Scorp estate I have has 2 keys and a short key with the number on a plastic strip - no red key but earlier models do have a red master (my R reg cos eatate has red key oct 97 build) but the 2.3 estate is a month later with key details as above, hope this helps.

The remotes rarely have a long range but better than yours.
Did you clean the contacts & gently wipe the carbon contact in the rubber pad. I find there tends to be a build of gunge in the remote between  the "fingers" of the door lock contacts - clean them gently & trace around them with something like a sharpened wooden thingytail stick ( Grin - those things you stick in cherries with your pint of Harveys Wink ).  Look here to see the contacts I mean:

Check the voltage of the batteries you fitted.

Thanks for all the info, actually looks like a re-programme might be on the cards for the remote.
Yes I wouldn't go to Fords, my uncle goes to the one in Torbay every year and comes out with quite a big bill.
Harveys, their nearest pub is only about 15 miles away at Rogate, possibly their most westerly one

The local Timpsons concession bloke reckons about £70 for a key but I need to go to one of their main branches, I'll follow up at the weekend hopefully.

I had a couple of new keys cut for around £30 each.

First one was from this chap who uses genuine ford keys and can cut them to match based on a couple of photos of your existing key, however they're without the chip so it won't start the car but it's handy to have a spare if you get locked out. He also rebuilt my tailgate lock with NOS ford parts after someone took a screwdriver to the barrel. Have a look through his listings as he has a few scorpio bits for sale too.

For a 'chipped' key I used this service:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Tibbe-Cut-Programmed-Car-Key-New-Fob-Pro gram-Chip-Will-Start-Your-Car/332014264518?hash=item4d4d97a0c6:g:I~cAAOSw-YVXmJet:rk:12:pf:0
It's a standard looking imitation key but it works perfectly, you'll need to send them the original so they can clone the chip though, I sent mine off with next day delivery on the monday and had them back by the end of the week.

I sent off my key on Tuesday and it came back together with the new one today, works great on the doors and starts fine. Thanks again for the tip.
