Can you change the sump gasket without taking out the engine.

If you can support the engine from above - such as a support beam across the inner wing flanges - you should then be able to remove the front crossmember and remove the sump.
Doubt you will be able to get the sump off without the front crossmember being removed as the oil pickup pipe will most likely prevent this.

If you leave the crossmember in place, you just have enough room to lower the sump and inch or so.  But you will struggle to clean the mating faces and torque the middle bolts

This is a difficult one.   The answer is yes, and no!   If I remember correctly there are two types of gasket, a one piece affair, and a split gasket.   The split gasket is prone to failing because its a split gasket.   I think the genuine Ford gasket is a one piece.   If you get a one piece gasket, and just drop the sump an inch as suggested above, it's extremely difficult to work the one piece gasket around the pick-up-pipe.   Cleaning the faces of the bottom of the block can be a bit fiddly, but actually seeing the sump face is clean can be trickier.   Torqing the bolts isn't much of a problem, you can just use a spanner, and "Huh....oocha" ought to do the trick!   Start in the centre of the sump and work outwards.   These small bolts can be a bit of a female dog to do with a torque wrench anyway, often over-tightened, just use your judgement with a spanner, and if when you re-fill the sump and start and warm the engine, it weeps, just tighten a wee bit more till it stops.   (The old ways still work!)
By the way, you CAN'T change the sump without the cross-member out of the way, and check the integrity of the sump, they are famous for going porous at the front.

So all in all, it can be done with it in, but for a good job, get the cross member out of the way.  Angry Mine leaks slightly and when I have been for a run, it drips what has builtup on the under shield on my drive  , a couple of drips.
