New Driver Insurance

Having spent MANY hours researching this subject now (my son is 16 and approaching 17 at high speed!) Does anyone have any other tips other that what I have discovered so far to reduce his insurance quote? We made him a year older for the quotes, therefore he has just passed his test. having trawled through ALL the group 1 and 2 cars it seems the cheapest car for him to insure (by a clear £1000) is a 1969-75 1200cc VW Beetle (he's not impressed) He stays within a very low risk postcode Student : Full time education limited milage of 5000 miles per year Car would be garaged at night He intends to take the Pass Plus advanced test for new drivers which can save up to 30% with certain insurance companies and hopefully take the Advanced driving test after that. If he adds me or any other experienced driver to his policy as a named driver it can again save anything up to 30% Comprehensive insurance is out the question due to cost so any excess is irrelevant, he will be TPF&T, third party is more expensive than TPF&T! If I put him on my current insurance as a named driver the insurance quote is exactly the same as if he took out his own policy! plus he cannot build up any no claims if he's not the main driver. Me taking out a new insurance for his car naming him as a driver is illegal (known as fronting) and again is the same price. The new ruling on non sex discrimination comes into force December 2012 so that should help although hopefully he will have been driving for a year since then. At the moment his quote for a beetle is coming in around £1800 per year with me as a named driver, (no pass plus discount applied) Any other small car is at least £3000, they quoted £17,400 for a 24v Scorpio Tried van insurance, cheapest was £4,600 I know new drivers and especially new male drivers have driven these prices up because of the accidents they cause and claims made against them but its hard not to feel sorry for new drivers. when I passed my test in 87 I can't remember thinking twice about the insurance cost, I think it was about £550! and within a year I went from a 1300 Mk2 Escort to a 2.8 Mk2 Granada At the moment it looks like he won't be having a car until he starts working (£3000 on top of all the other pocket money is one thing I won't be paying for)

spotted a young lad (looked about 14) sitting in a Golf GTi last night and wandered over to ask him about his insurance. He quite openly admits he bought the car, its in his dads name and his dad has insured it although he's not insured to drive it!! Satisfies the ANPR though!! I wonder how many are doing that? Scary...

Hi Stuart Have you had a look at the tracker system, the insurance companies install a tracker into the car and constantly assess how hes driving, it does have some harsh driving limitations though like only being able to drive between certain hours, religiously sticking to all speed limits and never doing and harsh braking and a very limited mileage they do rewards though for good driving like more hours or more miles but TBH £3000 is good for a young lad today, an apprentice at work pays nearly £5000 for a 1.25 mk5 fiesta...

With some companies, he can be put on parents insurance and be rewarded with no-claims against his good driving. I didn't think this possible, but apparently my Sister-in-Law is doing it with her 19 year old daughter. I think you need to shop around off-line for it though.

| Yep thats what I came up against, did you try the beetle?? If you look at the accident/claim figures its the 17 year old male drivers that are having the most/largest claims so to be fair to the insurance companies they are just doing what they need to cover themselves My insurance is £160 a year for my Sierra, never been cheaper. I think car performance is a big factor now, my first car was a 1979 Mk2 Escort 1.3 Ghia 57 Bhp and a claimed maximum speed of 91mph, I tried many times but never got it above 85 Look at the basic small cars now, many have over 100 Bhp, even the basic stuff, frightening acceleration and will do 100 mph plus easily... I had a few close scrapes with my old Escort as a new driver, nothing serious, but I doubt if it had 100 Bhp I would have been so lucky.. p.s. When I passed my test (1987) the car to have was the MK2 Escort RS 2000. (I never had one) It was the fastest thing out there, equivelant to the Subarus, ST's and Evo's of today. 110 Bhp Top Speed 112 mph 0-60mph 8.6 secs Makes you think eh

I had a Mk2 Escort many years ago, it was a 1.3 L, I used to be able to just squeeze a 'Ton' out of it. That was on the clock, so I don't suppose it was actually doing it. Those Ghia's were much heavier!!

It was an old 'T' reg. Used to be able to get it to the 'Ton' on the A71 at Newmains going towards Edinburgh.

I put my youngster on my policy, and the premium increased dramatically, I also added my wife, which brought the premium down![Huh](https://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/YaBBImages/huh.gif) !!!!!! I then added my Daughter who cannot drive but has a provisional licence and this brought the premium down again ?? so add more people!! Oh I then went with one of the Insurance companies where all drivers earn no claims bonus. Admiral, Churchill and some others. Daughter now has two years no claims and has never driven a mile!
