Wishbones
« on: Nov 5th, 2009, 7:25pm »

Had a wee play with an old wishbone tonight, looking for a way to replace the worn balljoint.

I tried hammering and pressing out the balljoint downwards but no give whatsoever.

I then ground off the raised circular ring on the bottom side which revealed a plastic cap, (the internal side of this is concave and seats the ball of the balljoint) with a thin metal surface which can be prised up (or down depending how you look at it) and the ball joint can be removed.

The i prised the rubber gaiter off the top

There is a lip on the bottom edge that the cap sits into, I initially thought this may be pressed in but it is moulded as part of the wishbone.

I turned it over and ground the top flush (the part the rubber is seated on) and this is also an integral part of the wishbone rather than a seperate part. (I confirmed this by cutting a cross section through the centre of the diameter).

The hole that is left tapers in very slightly from the bottom to the top (to hold the ball joint in place)

I reckon with minor machining to this area a balljoint unit similar to the one below could be pressed in and the wishbone be "repaired"

I've taken measurements of both the balljoint and aperture and will try and source a suitable replacement for a test run Wink

I reckon you're on the right track Stuart, when needs must the devil drives eh ?
I used to do a similar thing on the drag link ends when we ran Daimler DS420s,they weren't obsolete, just excessively priced to the point of stupidity !
            Good luck

There are many ball joints of such design now, but not many use a pinch bolt to retain the joint to the hub, good luck. wonder if the joint can be pressed out of a mondeo arm?. sorry just checked, mondeo are bolted to the arm, the only for with a press in joint is a probe.

Gentlemen...and Stuart  Cheesy. I have been in contact with a gentleman at Timkens and have e-mailed him the link to this page. Whilst they do not have a listing for this item he has offered to look in to the situation to see if they can help. Fingers crossed.  Wink

ty Mike  Grin

I'm picking up this Probe balljoint in the morning, it appears very close to what we need.

With having to grind the weld off to get the old balljoint out, the replacement with an exact original item might not be possible without welding it back in but we shall see what Mr. Timkens thinks.

An old school friend of mine with a fabrication business will machine out the wishbone if needed so i'll see how it goes. Wink

Dont throw out your old ones!!  Grin

I regret to say that the man from Timkens says they no longer have a product which would fit.  Sad

Hasnt this topic been locked yet?  Tongue Tongue

that probe one looks almost perfect, does it taper on the spline part or is it paraelle? i reckon you could just bore the wishbone out a bit and use a press to push it home

Matt I left it open until we get a definative oin this but I will keep it at the top of the list
Cheers
