Headlights always on
« on: Jan 23rd, 2011, 9:47am »

In many countries driving lights must be always turned on when driving if car doesn't have DRL -lights.

Many of the new cars have automatical lights, so the driver does not need to turn the lights themselves. It is a nice feature and eliminates the possibility that the lights aren't remembered to switched on.

Here is quick and easy light mod for Ford Scorpio:

1. Detach switchgear. instructions are here at part "Lighting Switchgear": http://fordscorpio.co.uk/fasciabulbs.htm

2. Disconnect connectors and make some room for soldering procedure (I removed fascia) (Image 1)

3. Connect two wires together for headlights. (Image 2)

4. If you want Front+Rear parking lights to illuminate as well, connect two more wires. (Image 3)

5. If you want Register plate bulbs to illuminate (Image 4)

Now lights turn on when Ignition is switched on, and turn off when Ignition is switched off.

For a purist car electrician, next steps would be:
- Add relay to turn dipped beams off when key is in start position. (But I guess bulbs, even xenon still have enough lifetime with this coupling..)
- Schottky diodes between connections. 1N5817 is good, has very low forward voltage drop.

These instructions apply to -98 German import Left hand drive Scorpio with foglamps, no idea if selector gear or pinout is different to others.

UPDATE:

Blue/black comes fron ignition lock (start+) and is to keep lights off during starting.

Problems now:
 - Foglights not working. Solution?: Get voltage to pins? 8? 10? HEADLAMPS_LHD.pdf page 4
 - If ignition is not turned on, impossible to have dipped beam working. That's because of GND->12. Solution?: to use not pin 9 but ?
- Pin 9 starts to feed ignition, making car unable to shutdown, if lights switch is on not turned off. Solution?: Diode...
