hi there

size wise, they would be fine, as they're a closer match to the original 195x65x15 wheels than the 225x50x16 12 spoke wheels.

size not a problem, running on 225/50/16's at the moment. wheels for sale are advertised with r rated max 106 mph tyres. there is no way a cosworth would pass an mot with those on

hi there

i saw that, but it must be a mistake. i doubt you could get a 'r' rated tyre that size.

i remember when 'h' rated tyres were the big thing to have!

Hi folks
many thanks for pointing this out - I believe the 'R' I was looking at stands for radial and the actual speed rating is V (149mph)

If I remember correctly, the ratings are for a fuly loaded car maintaining that speed for 30mins - or something like that - so I was pretty happy even with a 106mph limit.

I've had a look around regarding the MOT and have copied the following from www.tyresave.co.uk/tyreinfo.html

Quote:
For MOT requirements in this country, it is not necessary to fit a tyre with a speed rating to match the original vehicle fitment or the maximum speed of the vehicle. Tyres must be suitable for the purpose for which the vehicle will be used.
Insurance companies might say that a vehicle should be fitted with the tyres having the speed rating recommended by the car manufacturer: but even if you fit Z-rated tyres for speeds over 150 mph they will not insure you if you drive in excess of 70 mph in this country!
The vehicle manufacturer has to recommend a tyre with a rating to match the maximum speed of the car because when it leaves the factory he does not know exactly where the car is going or for what purpose it might be used. You might want to use the car in a country where higher speed limits apply than the UK or take it to a race track at the weekend.

It probably is prudent though to inform the insurance company if the tyres are rated less than recommended - I'm sure it would make no diference but then at least you're covered.

Thanks

nowt wrong with West Clacton!  lots of scorp owners around our way.  must be  coastal thing as there's plenty in southend too.

Anyway they went for 125in the end. nice for someone - £30 per corner - you could pay that for remoulds, let alone wheel and tyres.
Oh well.

Anyway, I've a rear load cover for the estate and a tinting mirror for sale if anyone's interrested.....

All the best
