Tintin, read this http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action= display;num=1150306588;start=10#10. I have never heard of 'adjusting' this item before but may be worth a try. I have done it on my 16v (I'm waiting for a scan) and it has made some difference. As stated the silicone 'plug' pulls out to reveal a phillips screw head. I marked the case and the screw and so far have moved it clockwise 3/4 of a turn. There is a diagram here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/iacvdata.htm but there appears to be two types. Mine is the large one shown but the Hitachi one mentioned does not appear to be the same design.

cheers Simmo, but mine appears to be missing the spring.... it isnt permanently high, just sometimes (often) revs up to 1700rpm when you take it out of drive, so i dont think its an adjustment issue (sometimes the idle is 800rpm when out of drive, and when it is 1700 it drops down after 10secs)

easier just to replace (or so i thought, but no-one seems to have one spare!!)
