By pass Hose to thermostat on a Cosworth
« on: Oct 15th, 2008, 11:35am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Urgently need a by pass hose for my Cosworth.
Part No. is 7334646 (959F-18686-AA).
Its about25cm long. 32mm dia one end. 22mm other end. Very contorted shape in between.

Any ideas where I can get a new one, preferably, or else a good used one.
I am in Shropshire.

Thanks

John,

Quickco in Chester can also get one for you; order by phone & pick up next day. About £15.

They are based at Bretton, adjacent to the Broughton Airbus wings factory; tel 01244 660457

Thanks guys. Both Ford and Fordpartsuk seem unable to locate this item. I will try Quickco tomorrow and let you know how I get on.

Its getting tougher to find new parts for the Cosworth engine. I wonder how much longer I can fight to keep my otherwise great car on the roadHuh

Still no luck finding this item. A Ford agent in SWitzerland has one but he won't sell it because he will keep it for his own customers.

I have a grudging admiration for his loyalty to his customers!!

John,

Is this the hose that comes off the top of the thermostat and up through the cylinder head? If so, I think I may have a good second hand one that I was going to use to repair my car which has a big hole in the same hose!

Seeing as I am now intending to break the thing; the hose is somewhat spare!

PM me and let me know

Baz

I didn't see the hose being removed but I know that it necessitated removal of the exhaust manifold on the near side As you say, it comes off the top of the thermostat  I have the hose with me so I'll describe it as best as I can.
It is about 25cm long. 22 mm dia one end 32 mm other end. The 22mm section is almost straight over about 17cm. then it cants to the right and then backwards at about 45 degrees. Its dia gradually increases from 22mm to 32mm over these two bends.

Does this sound like the one you have? My tel No. is 01743 790403. Please would you call me if you think we can do a deal.

Cheers

Is there any news about the hose you have, please. I've run out of ideas as to where I might find this item.

I am completely disillusioned by Ford's total inability to do anything to help me in this matter.

Surely some soft silicone heater hose would suffice for that if it hasn't got any 90 bends in it otherwise make one up using silicone and 1/2 copper fittings or even a copper pipe on with rubber ends to connect to .

Because of the restricted space at each end of the by-pass hose, I doubt very much whether it is possible to modify, or make up, a suitable hose using copper pipe and/or other bits and pieces. What is needed, really, is the correct hose profile, which can then be fitted after removing the inlet manifold and aircon compressor.

The diagram posted by Scorpio-man shows the hose alright, but unfortunately it does not show the wider diameter neck that fits over the thermostat or the very small space under the front of the left hand cylinder head that the longer part of the hose has to squeeze through!

My only suggestions are a) to try and source from a scrappy - although the hose may not be in good condition, or b) have a hose made up by the likes of Samco at http://www.samcosport.com/uk/index.asp - although this might be a bit expensive.

Hope this helps,

Thanks guys for your help. Answers to your questions are as follows:

To Scorpio man - Yes, it is the pipe No. 12 as you stated. Are you there Baz? Is this the pipe ypu have?

To Gozz - You are right, I'm sure. It is the inlet cluster- not the exhaust manifold which has been taken off. (The car broke down outside the Ford dealership and I left it to them to solve. So I am unaware of the exact work which was necessary to remove the burst pipe).

To Snoopy - I have been reluctant to go down the route of making up a pipe as you suggest since I am not sure how much clearance there is around other fitting: e.g. compressor, inlet cluster, etc. However I will have to use this route if Baz cannot help. I will have to depend upon a little understanding from Ford in these circumstances however.

To Bizzay - With the car at the Ford garage my options are limited as to how many modifications I can introduce. If I decide to have the car brought home (at a cost of £70) I will be in a better position to assess the best way forward. Fot the time being, however, I'm looking for a solution where Ford do the re-assembly work. (This time of year I don't fancy lying under the car in the driveway!!)

THanks again to everyone. Hope to get some good news from you Baz.

OK,

I finally found the bag with all the hoses in it.... I had put it away safely in the boot of my spares Corsair and then forgot!

I will take a few pictures in a while and see if it is the same hose John

Thanks Baz. Eargerly awaiting the pics. I haven't mastered the digital camera bit yet, so I'll try to describe it in words:

Approx. 25 cm long. Starts at 22 mm dia. and is almost straight for first 17 cm. Then cants right, then cants back at about 45 degrees, finally terminating at 32mm dia.

John,

In the third picture above there is a small right angled hose shown, which goes between the bottom of the thermostat to the water pump housing. This one is also likely to fail so I would ask Baz for this one as well and then you have a spare if the one on your Cossie is actually OK when you do the job.

Cheers,
