I'm assuming this is the 24v thermostat?

You cant run it without a thermostat if thats what you meant.

People either buy a new one or a second hand one, theres no way round it i'm afraid

Are you sure yours has packed in??

Dave.
Take it off(a feat in itself)put it in a pan of hot water, the valve in it should open well before the water boils,a thermometer is preferable.

I think the 24v radiator is a weak design, I would suspect your thermostat is ok unless you've seen any signs to suggest otherwise such as running cold or overheating

Just as a matter of interest,I bought a 24v with a shiny new radiator fitted for the previous owner.I noticed something lying in the undercover, and on closer inspection it turned out to be the bottom rail and one set of cooling ribs, the bottom water way had gone banana shaped and pushed it off.The radiator is not a genuine article, but a poor little narrow imitation with a much reduced cooling area.

Yes,I think it is a commercial recore using a smaller number of rows than there should be.I have noticed on other vehicles in the past that this is what they tend to do.If you suggest to them that the rad is less efficient they will say that it is perfectly adequate.I had one done for a Granada 3 which I think should have had three rows of tubes, there were only two,but it was never any bother.

but if it is a recore, surely they would have to fit the tubes to the side tanks etc. and they are a set width. Is the frame of the rad the normal width and the tubes section in the centre narrower or is it all narrower than the normal rad?

Baz.
I'll try to remember to measure it tomorrow, but I do know that the bottom rail of the frame, which fell off is nowhere near as wide as a pukka Ford one as fitted to all my other cars. The tanks appear correct and have the transmission cooler and air bleed pipe connections, there may be a possibility that the side members to which the waterways attach are made to fit the tanks, but use less tubes ie as a cost cutting exercise.

Further to the poor imitation radiator fitted to my 24v for the previous owner, the core is about 32mm thick, the front row of tubes are about 15mm back from the edge of the end plate to which the plastic tanks are fitted, thus leaving sufficient space for another row.
The rad in my breaker 24v limo, has a core about 43mm thick, and is stuffed with tubes from front to back as you would expect, and is a far more substantially built rad with much stronger top and bottom rails.Just as an aside,I bought a pattern part rad for my girl's Peugeot 306 cabriolet,it had no top and bottom frame rails, and was only held together by the round water tubes from side to side.In fact it resembled an oversize heater matrix with it's weedy soft little cooling fins.I suppose that's progress  Sad
