thermostat has good days and bad sometimes it wont open at all and others its fine.
tried cleaning it but no diffrence sadly

as for the water pump it started leaking from the little hole in the casing round the shaft, so we ran a tap through it and wound a bolt in but it only a tempory fix.

Is it definitely the stat and not the temp sender unit?

They have a habit of going dud and sending the temp gauge all over the place.

Fordparts advertise new thermostats on ebay for £110 each! slightly cheaper than Ford dealers

You might still be able to get a waterpump from Ford, sometimes you can, sometimes you can't but they must be very nearly obsolete now.

If you can get one you're looking at £150 plus

There is a thread somewhere showing how to convert the 12v pump which is a fraction of the price and will probably end up eventually as the only alternative, will have a look for it.
