i've owned granada's sine 1984 ,my first being a mark 1 3.0 gxl and carrying on from there, but having finally sucumbed to the strange looks of the scorpio i am not finding it to be the easily maintained and indisputably reliable beast that i have always found its predescessors to be.am i just unlucky with the particular beast i have chosen ,or is there an underlying trend going on with the new ones .i was never expecting stunning performance from an oil burner but thought that the saving on fuel was a factor these days ,family all being spread to the four corners of the country but  did i set my expectations too high or are they just not as good as the old modelsHuhHuh

Smiley Your car is only as good as the previous service history. Scorpios are normaly long lived if looked after, especialy the bigger engined models. That's why our site exists. Buy a bad one and your wallet & sanity suffer.
Buy a good one , your Wallet can still suffer but not as much, but you can you can enjoy the pleasure, of driving one of motorings best kept secrets. No Pain No Gain as whoever once said.

hi mick. with yours and grants help maybe i can start to enjoy this scorp .i have only owned it two weeks and it was looking like a bottomless moneypit. brakes, header bottle, wiring to the rear end, abs, and power stearing pump would have been enough without this latest problem. a good service is on the agenda tomorrow once the electrical problem is sorted out .i hope that will give it more of the performance i was expecting from it ,having driven other alfa td engined beasts, all i need then is a headlamp unit and the spending , in the short term at least should be at an end.im sure it is just the stress of today that is tarnishing the reputation of a perfectly good vehicle but you can only tell as you find....watch this space you never know in a week or two i might be here saying what a fantastic descision buying it was .as to service history according to its book it has never missed a service in its life ,although i notice not by a ford agent since it was three years old...just goes to show ,u gets what u pays 4. cheers  Cheesy

Despite loving the car and what it can do I came to the comclusion a long time ago that in terms of reliability they are not as good as the preceeding models.

They suffer a number of inherent weaknesses in the areas of wiring, some suspension and brake items (wishbones, disks) and with certain engines (notably the 24V). When combined with low quality servicing this results in hefty bills until the car is sorted. They are  car to keep as initial costs will be high and should then decrease as you iron out the faults.

hello Steve, i was quite surprised that someone is of the same opinion . i agree with you about poor servicing quality ,i am sure that any good service would have picked up on most of the problems with this car, especially the brakes and electrical.half of the rear lights not working is not exactly a minor fault....anyway thanks to a couple of helpfull members of this site i have now got everything up to standard, it has been a lifeline.and a couple of usefull pieces of experience to pass on and maybe help someone else.  heres looking forward to a continuing relationship with my new friends at fordscorpio.com     GEOFF

having owned my saloon since it was 6 month old (Ford demonstrator), and serviced it myself every 6 months without fail, the car has NEVER faulted or left me down in any way. I can honestly say that I can jump in it now and drive to the other end of England without any doubts/problems.

But it doesn't come cheap!! oil is changed every 3000 miles, filter every 6000. Full major service every 12000. Only quality parts used. If the car needs it, it gets it now rather than later. The car has turned 60,000 and passed the MOT last week with flying colours.

The estate I bought was Ford serviced up to 150,000 miles. It has 158,000 now and never misses a beat. I've just changed the plug leads, engine harness and both coil packs as the engine hunted on idle and had a small miss going up through the revs. £230 later, very smooth and a pleasure to drive. In the winter we've just had, jump in, flick the heated seats on, heated screens on and away to work......

The moral to my ramblings is.......Well Serviced...do not scrimp on servicing....if you do, the car will suffer, and so will your wallet!!!!

yes simon ,we agree on that. the main problem i seem to have suffered is taking a service history at face value and not taking the time to question it closer or check the vehicle as thouroughly as experience has taught me i should .every granada i have owned has always been treated to the best of parts e.t.c funds have allowed and every single one has been as reliable as yours sounds. two of them being on thier third time around the clock and one having 379000 miles on the clock when a coach tried to use it as a parking space on an m6 slip road.anyway i digress....now this one has been treated the same i hope to join the ranks of the new scorpio disciples ,one thing is for sure ,it will be treated better than it obviously has for the last few years. and we'll see if it can join the ranks of properly run in granadas that have preceded it.      Geoff

been round the clock more times than Bill haly!! another reason I'm faithful to the Scorpio is....

when a coach tried to use it as a parking space on an m6 slip road.

now try that in a small eurobox!!!!and you'll be dialling 999 with a broken limb!!!!!!!,with the Scorpio, you'll get out and go to the bodywork and wipe it clean...saying flycrap!!!!

yes simon with that i wholeheartedly agree!!!! the said granada sorp was still driveable albeit with a trailer board plugged in for rear lights, it was the insurance co that delared it d.o.a. . in one of those euro boxes it would almost certainly have been me instead!!!
having now driven this beast for a couple of days trouble free, i'm beginning to find it all of the drivers car that any of its predecessors have been , and at what seems to be an average of just over 40 m.p.g. what more could you ask of  it.

That sounds interesting. I used to be heavily into the trust  Capri and once did a matching trailer with one. Took it to loads of shows and it got alot of attention.

Hi Fellas,

when it comes to longevity and service history I must be an exception. Like many others I've had granadas since the early 70's and have trated tham with careful neglect. i.e. only take it to a garage when I feel like a game of roulette, otherwise change the oil every 25,000 or so and while I'm at it have a quick look round to see if anything looks stressed. Result - about 650,000 miles of trouble free motoring apart from the odd exception when I took it to a garage to have a few free extras fitted in the way of oil leaks, wobbles, dents and coughs etc. Seriously, that's the way I've always treated them and they seem to respond well to not being prodded around unless absolutely necessary. The only persistent problem I've had has been braking judder which has always started soon after letting someone else (a specialist) fit new pads.  My last Granada had 44,000 miles when I bought it. the oil was a bit low but it hadn't been touched since it's 12000 service. I did another 160000 miles and it never used any oil, water ar any other fluid until it was mugged by a white Van and died of its injuries. My Scorpio bought 2 months ago had full service history when I bought it and just about every ailment known to man. I guess I'm just going to have to start a prolonged program of serious neglect.
