Just thought i would let you know that my new- wll new to me(9Cool cosworth estate has just given up the ghost. Coming home from Wales after a lovely weekend i noticed the car getting hot towards the end of my journey. As i was only a couple of miles from home i contuied on my way. Almost outside my front door the car died. I had lost all my water. I was unable to find the leak and the car is now in the garage being investigated-suspect leak at the usual place between the heads. Looks like being expensive!! Ouch!! The moral being, when your car runs hotter than normal, STOP! and at least have a look. My last Cossie never gave me any problems (accept on the day of the sale- see Vulcan). So i am a little upset to say the least, especially as i gave top dollar. Oh well, looks like plenty of overtime at workto pay for it. Ps. i still love these cars. john.n Sad

I am really very sorry to hear this John, I hope you can get it fixed at reasonable cost.

My car is fine now, the inspection proved that it must've been a plug in the autobox breather that spurted ATF onto the exhausts as the colour smell and level of the a/box fluid is still ok to this day.

Hope you get yours sorted...

regards

John,

sorry to hear about your trouble, but I would also suspect the radiator being at fault in fact I would imagine that more Cosworths have had trouble with the rad than between the heads on here!

Thanks for your replys Vulcan and Baz. Glad my old cossie is still a.o.k. George. As for the rad Baz, that was one of the first things i looked at when buying the car, as i noticed that on my old one -now Vulcans a sign of balloning and put on a new one before any problems arose with it. It looks like a headskim job, if the heads are not too bad, plus associated parts. Garage says dont be surprised if it comes to £1000! Ah, the joys of motoring. regards, john.n Shocked

The same thing happened to me earlier this year when, at 70mph my coolant was suddenly dumped on the road. It turned out to be the external rubber hose that comes off the top of the thermostat housing and has a 90 degree bend in it on the nearside cylinder bank. The FMD had to take off the inlet manifolds to get at it. Whole job cost about £350.

The radiator was also damaged (ballooning at the bottom) and subsequently failed a few months later. Fortunately, there was no other damage to the engine, but I had only travelled a few miles from a cold start when this happened, and stopped in time I guess!

I hope things are not as bad as they sound.

Neil.

Just phoned the garage this morning. The problem  with my car is a blown head gasket. So just waiting for them to repair it and send me the bill-along with a couple of headache tablets. At least its repairable. john.n Huh

Sorry to hear about your bad news John, same thing happened to my head gasket, i hope fingers crossed(& everything else) it isn't as bad as mine though.  head turned out to be cracked in three places and because of the high mileage(195.000) i had to get another engine.

Good luck mate and keep us informed of the progress.

Picked up my car today. The garage changed both head gaskets, and a few hoses etc. Said it was silly not to while the bits were off, makes sense to me. They seem to have done a good job- wont really know untill i give it a run, possibly Wales next weekend. The temp gauge needle is sitting nicely in the middle when hot, and i sat in traffic for 30 mins on the way home. The only bad bit was obviously the bill- £1165! OUCH!! I dont mind paying but what annoys me is giving the government 17+ percent vat on top of my bill. Why should they benefit from my bad luck?  Anyway thanks for the interest shown, now i can start to enjoy the car. Regards, john.n Cheesy
