hi it needed new steering rack for MOT plus a few bulbs, new discs on front and new pads all round, one of the old discs fell apart when they removed it, new gearbox oil and filter, plus a general service as the car has been seriously neglected by previous owners, i reckon the bill will finish up between £800-£900 in total, i had already spent £300 replacing all the tyres last month. paul

Where'd you get the tyres Nadaman ? £300 is a good price in comparison for what i've been quoted for (£420 for 4 Goodrich ones with 5 years gaurentee, free puncture replace etc) But yes these cars are expensive to own with age related stuff going all the time. Guys shouldn't play the car up to be so much more than it is leading to dissappointment with new owners like myself. My next bill will be lovely. I need 4 tyres, cam chain/tensioners, new autobox, diff bearings, steering rack, sump gaskets, etc etc Money pit gearbox eating heap o nutse. As soon as the car is 100%... it's going.

i got the tyres from just tyres in chesham in bucks, the reason i got them cheap is cos the guy who works there is a relative of a friend. they would have cost £460 retail price. paul

| Dan, Looks like either the car you bought has been clocked, sevearly neglected for a long time or made on a monday morning with a hangover My scorpio has done double the miles of yours, a few sensors, a gearbox solenoid, one wheel hub and bearing, split rad hose and the guy who owned it before me did the stearing rack Not to bad for a car thats 10 in June

There does seem to be an awful lot wrong with it considering it had so little mileage. The red one I sold last year had 110,000 and apart from a couple of radiators and the usual brake pads and tyres, didn't cost a lot to run (apart from the 24v thirst!) I had a Rover 75 that had 10 times that amount of stuff done in the first 18 monmths including new front and rear windscreens!! I don't think anyone on here plays the cars up. You buy a car for a couple of grand which brings it into the reach of even the most modestly off people (no offence to anyone intended!) but when things go wrong, you will be charged the cost for parts and labour on what is in fact quite an advanced piece of machinery which, when new, cost in excess of £22,000. The Cosworth engine is even more prone to problems because it is a highly advanced piece of kit compared to most engines. It is a problem that if you do not research exactly how much can and does go wrong and how much it actually costs and the falling availability of parts as well doesn't help. Before I spent my hard earned cash nearly 3 years ago now, I was a member here for ages and also the mailing list so I bought my Cosworth with my eyes open (and my second one last year as well!) The guy who bought my red one didn't really realise how few miles to the gallon they do and promptly sold it after a few weeks Baz

Paul - one thing to remember.. None of the things you have had to pay out for are faults of the Scorpio by design... Just maintainable things.. and unfortunately in your case they all need maintaining at once.. That’s why I paid a bit extra for mine as far as running gear and serviceable items it is as good as new! Anyway I look forward to seeing it at the next GSO meet! Phil
