Well, After waiting god knows how many years for a Scorpio I can finally say-I'VE GOT ONE!!!! It isn't the Cosworth saloon I bought from a garage 2 weeks ago-that is still waiting for a waterpump that never showed up-the purchase has been cancelled and my deposit returned. It is infact someone's from work who was p/x'ing it for a Jag today. I got to hear about it totally by chance on Monday, and 2 days later its sat outside my house Result!!!!! Its a 98 2.3 Ultima estate and it is fantastic! The car is huge which will be ideal for our mad summer camping holidays. Its even got a tow bar just incase we need a trailer for my OH's wardrobe!!! (Bless her) I can finally stop coming on these boards and dreaming.......Now I'm a fully fledged member! There are a couple of things that need sorting on the car so I look forward to posting for advice in the future....and hopefully contributing a little too. Wayne

Cracking job Wayne, Nice motor, you dont say if its a manual or auto ?? I have the 2.3 manual ultima estate and I gota say its great, loads a poke when you need it yet reasonable fuel consumption, but watch out for those short trips or it will soon be down to 24v figures One thing that swung it for me is the fact you can tow 2000Kg off the back of it and it still pulls like a train the saloon can only muster 1800kg from memory. I have had nearly 3 ton hung off it in the past and it really didnt appear to both it much OK it was only for a few miles though, mind you the fuel consumption never made it into double figures Oh yes and none of those nasty chain problems like the 24v ChrisB

Thanks guys, Its the auto.......think i was too excited when writing The tow bar on mine is kind of a quick release one that i haven't quite fathomed yet. But as I haven't got a trailer i'm in no rush to work it out. What nasty chain problems?? Is that the cam chain I've seen crop up a few times on here? By that then I assume the 2.3 has a cam belt? Whats the recommended interval for changing the cambelt? I'm unsure if the guy before me had it done (Forgot to ask him) so I'll make plans for that in the not too distant future. The rear tyres need changing and the fronts will hopefully last till next year. I'm gonna change the engine oil/filter and the autobox oil/filter along with the air filter and give everything else a thorough check. There is a strange "metallic" ish clicking when cornering to the right (see "problems" ) I'm unsure what it is but I wondered if it could be the self levelling suspension? Does this model have it? Previous owner mentioned it today when I told him, but he hadn't experienced it before? Fingers crossed its nothing major Oh, and once I get my camera out i'll leave some pics

| The 24v engines appear to suffer a fair bit with tensioner failer and results in one or both chains jumping on the cams, its well documented on the FS site. The 2.3 still have chains on the cam but dont suffer from this. Chris B

Thats pretty good to hear! I prefer chains than belts. Hopefully I'll get a full service in the next week or so and see exactly what the overall condition of the car is

hi there the chain shouldn't need replaced at any mileage. the 24 valve does have some issues with it's chain, but the 16 valve engines seems to be fine.

Thanks all-nice to know its built to last! Eddie-250k is bloody impressive!!! A major confidence boost, though I have to admit that after spending the last few weeks on this site and seeing your replies to posts, or more importantly your avatar I'm still scared of ya! That pic is something i wouldn't want to see on a dark night! (no offence meant )

I belive that the problem is that the numptys designed the cam chain as one long chain, unlike the sensible people at Jag! (OOPS! they are Ford now as well) who used two chains, one for each cam.

Bob, The 24V Cosworth Scorpio engine has 2 cam chains, too - one on each bank. The problem is most probably down to a weak o/s tensioner that drained overnight, allowing the chain to flop about briefly when started from cold, and battering the chain guides until the oil pressure came up. I wrote all this up some years ago on http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/timingchain29cos.htm The Scorpio DOHC engines also use 2 chains - one for the cams and a shorter one for the oil pump ancillary shaft. Incidentally, Jaguar V8's also had trouble with a cam chain tensioner and had to revise them a few years ago.
