Hiya everyone - new scorp owner here

I've just bought a 2.9 12v 1995/6 Ford Scorpio saloon with a dented wing, cracked bumper and a charging problem. May be a mad moment, but on the plus I know the car and the guy selling it and the best bit ( until I know otherwise ) is that its £200. He wanted £700. I know its only the 12v , but I always feel that real engines have 6 or more cylinders Shame its not the Cossie , but it should be a good long lasting lump. I'll see if I've made a tragic mistake when I get my hands on it. Bye for now chaps and trust me I'll be begging for help real soon.

Hello and Welcome Good price 12v's are pretty bomb proof and dont seem to suffer from any specific problems unlike the 24v and DOHC's

Hi & welcome Chrail.Good choice in motors there.Personally i,ve always prefered the 12 valve models as they usually prove to be the least problematic (speaking from experiance). One thing you wont like however is the fuel consumption.Im regularly reduced to tears every time i fill the tank .One thing is for sure though, you wont find a more classy ,comfy, refind car for the money.Enjoy

| Oi...I'm not quite sure how to take that I never had either of the last two problems, my loom cracked up but I rewired it myself after I managed to pick myself up off of the floor in the local dealer when I asked the price of a new loom Main problems were fuel consumption and the autobox, the latter being the main reason I decided to part company with the old girl. I did start losing a bit of coolant later on, whether this was the manifold starting to give or something else I never found out. But the 2.3 engine is nice, if not quite a V6. Quiet and smooth revving, relaxed at speed. In a different class to the 1.8 I have in the Mondeo although the Mondeo does a constant 35mpg and has been 120% reliable so far so I'm happy.. If I did it again, I'd probably go for the 12v or the derv if it had to be dependable, I'd love to try a 2.3 with the waggly stick though Regards, Bruce.

Thanks for the welcome chaps , I had a look at beast this weekend. Looks better than I imagined!! The dent on the wing was whether the owner kicked it for the dead battery, so I would expect a paintless dent removal company would have no problem sorting that. Tiny specle of rust on one arch, couldnt feel any mud, so could be just an untouched stonechip. The bumper is cracked and still has phesant feathers embedded in it. A couple of spots of laquer are missing/damaged, but only very small. The engine runs a bit lumpy ( apparently his mate!?! has fiddled ), so I reckon hes 'fiddled' an air leak in. The battery discharges overnight but drains seem clear and both fuseboxes have their covers, so when I get it at the end of the month, its investigation time. The original alarm is disconnect and replaced by another and its had another barrel, but has the original keys (a its got the chip ), wonder if something alarm related's been left behind? The owner drives it repeatedly throughout the days doing at least 4 5mile trips to the stables and says that as long as he leaves the battery disconnected overnight he has no problem. As for me it pains me seeing it in need of a d**n good clear inside and out, sitting in the mud at the stables. I'll get it on the 25th Jan, cant wait. Have to admit I was looking at Omegas, but man can those things rust in the oddest of places. 10 seconds in the Scorp seat and I just knew I'd made the right decision I even like the way they look

The engine may settle down once you don't have to disconnect the battery - the engine management has to keep relearning all the sensor values at the moment.

You need to find out the discharge value which might point you /us in the right direction .... even though it has BOTH covers on the fuse boxes .... DOES it have a BATTERY cover ?? Air leaks on the 12 v are not as serious as on some of some of the other models but need finding. one place to look is under the IACV ...

Hmmm no it doesnt have the battery cover Still I can always hope that the battery drain has another cause thats easier to fix ..... after all I've seen lots and lots of posts the missing battery cover lets water in an all kinds of electrical silliness happen, but I dont think I've seen a post where it causes a straight forward battery drain. Or am I deluding myself .......
