Modified back end and it is "an uneconomic repair"

Busily minding my own business at the end of a line of standing traffic on Jacobs Well Lane in Wakefield today, heard an almighty crunch, looked in my rear view mirror in time to see what later proved to be a Toyota Avensis private hire car having its back end lifted by a single decker bus and headed in my direction.

The Avensis then went under the back end of my 16 valve and I was pushed forward. Stopping about a foot short of a Peugeot 106 in front.

Passing ambulance blue lighted the tax driver away from a very much shortened Avensis. Front end of the bus seriously mangled.

At this point the obvious appears to be back bumper is trashed and popped of its mountings, rear light bar is crushed. Reversing sensors continually beep in reverse.

Not plucked up the courage to look under the back of the car. Boot lid opens and shuts car got me back home OK

Just spoken to my broker and had first conversation with insurance company, now I am waiting to get some sort of verdict.  Cry Huh

Geoff,What bad luck !. Unless there is other serious, unseen, damage the parts should be available here if nowhere else. Glad you are ok.

Thanks for the concern and sympathy folks

I am not so bad although I have a bit of a headache, stiff neck and I am fuming! The taxi driver was in quite a bad way.

The bus driver is probably not to happy at the moment either but it looks pretty straightforward in terms of where responsibility lies.

Hoping that the structure of the Scorp is OK but I guess I will not know that until the insurers have a look at it.

If all else OK will need a back bumper and a pre-facelift rear light bar, somehow I think that may be to simple to hope for, we shall see.

At this rate I may have to look at putting the 12 valve back on the road.

Will post up the piccies when I get time.

i hate to be the bringer of possibly bad tidings.....but.....the blame might not be that simple (hopefully it is as it means the claim is sorted quicker);
one of the most common accident with buses (in london anyway) is the car that has risked life n limb to get past the bus only to turn left or right 30 yards down the road which generally doesnt leave enough braking space for 10+ tonne of moving mass. i dont know if its blatant stupidity, ignorance, attitude or all 3 but the amount of cars that do this with no thought for their own safety let alone up to 80 people on the bus has never ceased to amaze me in the few years i've been driving buses. having said that, hopefully the bus will have cctv of the accident which will clear up things...

This one was a bit more straightforward, it looks as if the bus simply did not stop, having driven down a road that has construction work going on and regular lines of standing traffic, I  am not sure what the ultimate conclusion is but have had a letter from the bus company wanting to inspect my car and then "carry out repairs." I think they have reached their own view.

However I have already arranged for my insurer to collect it and they are handling things from here in.

Well I guess we shall see what happens now, had a look under the car before it was uplifted looks like a bit of deformation on the rear panel beneath the bumper and a dint in the spare wheel well.

My Scorp clearly got the best of this but I still reckon it may be a write off when they price up the parts, paint and labour.

If it is only parts then I am tempted to try to put it back on the road myself.

Got a message from the repairer this morning, they have costed the repair and it is classed as uneconomic. Due to get a call from the insurance company to discuss options.

Problem is gauging a replacement value and what else I will be able to get with the money that they will give me that gives me aircon, cruise control, abs heated seats and the ability to keep going all day in comfort.

You are clearly not to blame for this misshap, it is you that needs to be compensated to your satisfaction even if they have to carry out an "Uneconomical" repair.  You want what you had before ie: your car which you pay lots of money to keep on the road, you should claim classical car status and tell them you will settle for no less.  Legally, the bus co are responsible and will have insurances to back them up far exceeding anything you or I could afford.
I would consult a good solicitor, and charge it to the claim.... and don't forget the personal injury, stress and inconvenience etc etc

Only my opinion....

It would seem a shame for it to be written off for such a small amount of damage - surely a DIY repair candidate for someone on this site ? Can you get a cash payment plus the car as salvage ? Worst case would be that you sell it to someone on the site for parts or break it yourself - at least you would know that it hadn't gone to waste.

hi geoff

i wouldn't repair it myself. to much hassle.

i'd rather try and get the bus company to pay for a repair, otherwise you'll get peanuts for it. Sad

Thanks folks,

I need to get hands on the estimate to see what the repairer thought was needed. That way if the insurance company do offer me cash and the car as salvage I could look at getting it done.

However if any of this is structural I would not want to go down that route.

Anyhow I will keep you all informed.

You should be entitled to a copy of the estimate, don't let them fob you off it is the driver at fault, looks like he was going some too. Not unusual....

Dave

That is not to be. Classed as a B, quite a lot of rear end structural damage.

For a number of reasons I am letting it go. Will be putting the 12valve back on the road in May.

Not happy and there is something of a saga developing.   Angry
