MOT Pass with Advisory

Took the ole girl for MOT today and it was initially a fail on n/s rear wheel bearing. (excessive play)
Tester rang me, asked me if I wanted to sort it or the garage, I asked how much, he said if just adjustment free of charge, so i says, even if it needs a new bearing just do it.
Anyways, adjustment sorted it, so Ive got 13 mths under me belt.
Whooo hooo. Grin

Well done Rod. I have already broken the run on luck. Mine failed on the 18th on emissions and missing bolts on the rear caliper. The latter has been sorted as it was dangerous and I am waiting for delivery of a cat to sort out the emissions problem. Hopefully that will sort it on the retest

Gozz.
When I say "adjusted" I suppose I should have said "tightened"

I must admit tho when he said himself "keep your eye on it" I was a little concerned.
I might just go buy a new bearing and get it fitted to be on the safe side. (if their still available)

Ignore it at your peril... Believe me when we say get a new one fitted ASAP... It is NOT difficult to do and should take about an hour if all goes well . The kits are the same as the granda, so they are still available, from MOST good motor factors. The wafer nut is also from FMD for a couple of beer tokens ALWAYS fit a new one and make sure you use thread lock on the NUT ( strong) variety. REMEMBER the scorpio bearing nuts are not Left and right handed. they are both normal  so the nearside always has a tendency to undo!.................Hence the thread lock .

AND... still re-check it after a couple of hundred miles to make sure it is still torqued up to 200ft/lbs. This is way beyond the range of normal DIY wrenches.

Agree

It's basically a good breaker bar (Snap - On) or similair, with about 4ft scaffold pole on the end and jump on it.

Thanks for the advice gents.

Had a new one fitted today by the garage, good job I did as well,
The old one was not far off being devoid of "dirty coloured"(brown) grease, there were signs of slight water ingress which I assume came through the seal.
There was no pitting or score marks on the hub (phew)
Got to take it back end of Nov for a check on the torque.(free)

Bearing kit including wafer nut .........£49.95
Labour..............£35.00

My 24v Ultima has covered about 86, 000 miles and nowadays I cover less than 6.000 miles per annum. Overall the car is in excellent condition and at the moment the bodywork  is being  brought up to showroom condition by the best man I could find.

As a precaution would it be sensible to replace the rear wheel bearings?

Not necessarily, they don't all give trouble.Make sure the nuts are torqued up,then jack up and grasp top and bottom rocking to test for wear, turn the wheels and feel for roughness, you can't spin em because of the diff and possibility of pads dragging, however you can jack the back complete, put it in gear and run it listening for grinding or hum, bear in mind though that the pinion bearings are sometimes noisy and the sound can be transmitted down the driveshafts.
