The old girl has passed the MOT, I mean the car!
Attached was an advisory - slight play on the steering rack at each end, will this be a new steering rack when the time comes when it fails, or is there a simple repair that will do the job at a less cost?
regards,
Podge.

Good stuff! Grin

I believe some people have repaired their racks in the past although my preference would just be a replacement

Aye because it's a steering rack rather than a steering box you would be able to shim it.   I remember repairing a re-circulating-ball steering box from a BMW '7' series, very tricky job and then it only lasted about three months.   You probably wouldn't find the shims off the shelf to repair your rack, and then you wouldn't have the right tool to adjust the back-lash.   I agree with Highlander, despite the expense, it would be best to get a re-con or new, and fit it and then enjoy it's lasting effect.

I fitted a rack on a 12v limo today,it came from Sutton Auto Factors via Ebay,£99 inc carriage.Unfortunately I failed to notice that it was a 24v rack and the orifice for the speed sensitive actuator was plugged off.I ended up with the oil down the pit !!.Tomorrow is make a dummy blank off, can,t be troubled to go through the complaining rigmarole, that will teach me to look more carefully in future.

Hi
Many thanks for all your suggestions regarding the fault with the steering rack - I will go with a replacement when the time comes.
Thanks again,
Podge.
