Matt, I thought it had been that way for years now I've had the Capri SORN'd for about 8 years now. Heard at the time that the DVLA were cutting up funny and fining people who had cars registered to them with no SORN or tax. Bruce.

Looks a sensible idea, I wonder how easy it will be to work with the likes of car dealers, auction companies etc I better get that uninsured/taxed motor on my drive sorted for the New Year!

| Its currently possible to legally have a car (such as the one I have on the drive) which is Taxed but not insured, the new regulations will mean I will either have to insure it or SORN it. They should go the whole hog and include the Mot

Yep, I was thinking of the tax rules. Seems a good idea if it works. They use the ANPR cameras a lot around here during the summer, seem to catch a lot of people with them. But then if you're legal, you've got nothing to worry about Like Matt though it's gonna cause a problem for me, I only ever keep one car insured full time, anything else I have just gets insured when I want to use it Bruce.

| Right. But I think Matt means that he was insuring it for short periods, that's what I was doing when I had the XJR-s. Wasn't using it over the winter so would just keep it parked up out of the way and insure it for a few days or a week at a time on temp insurance..expensive but still cheaper than doing the year in one go, kinda like 'pay as you go'. Not sure if you can pull a car on and off SORN, week in, week out just like that? Bruce.

Sadly it looks like the days of running two or more cars is coming to and end. I currently have one Sierra, one Scorpio a Suzuki jeep and a van on the road! preparing to cut that drastically as the insurance next year looks like its going to be too much

| You could theoretically, there is no limit on it, although its a wee bit extra work and you'd lose up to a months tax every time you did it. Its going to cause problems

I don't think the insurance database is sufficiently up to date for the ANPR,the DVLA is,so if it sees a currently taxed vehicle, that vehicle could be uninsured even though the alarm doesn't operate. This is just another futile attempt at sewing up the naughty motorist

What a PITA Says 'From early 2011' but no start date for this new rule Gonna have to SORN the Scorpio for a couple of months now as I'm running a Jeep through the winter...then I'll have to SORN the Jeep and get the the Scorpio re-taxed and so on...

It's all a bit of a grey area anyway, like needing valid insurance and MOT to apply for a tax disc. Yep, I realise why it's done that way but it's a nightmare if all 3 need renewing at the same time My tax expires at the end of Nov, insurance is renewed on the 28th Nov, MOT is usually around the 20th Nov. Used to be fine, I used to apply for the new disc online about a week before and the DVLA would send it (presumably because I had valid insurance at the time I applied), now it won't accept my application any more becuase it realizes the insurance renews 2 days earlier than the tax Now I have to do it at the Post Office, take the current insurance and the letter saying that it'll be automatically renewed on 29th Nov and explain it to them, usually common sense prevails and they give me the disc. Grrr Bruce.

| That is definitely on the cards. I know someone in the civil serv' that deals with transport, first indications are to start in Wales or Scotland with an annual charge of £40. Just to see the reaction!

I'm with you, Highlander. I would go to jail too as I'm not going to pay the government for something that is mine and is on my property. When I go on the road with one of my vehicles then they can charge me. Tom

Have just SORN'd the Scorpio and sent the tax disc back - it was totally useless in the recent snow and ice - couldn't even get out of the estate where I live - and with the possibility of more snow over the next couple of months I am now running around in a 4x4 Jeep Cherokee for the rest of the winter. Good points - it came with 11 months MOT and taxed till the end of May and had no problems at all with the arctic conditions, only bad point so far is 16.5mpg but it is a 4 litre petrol engine...lucky my annual mileage is quite low.
