Failed MoT

Oh well that time of year again and one of the Scorpios failed the dreaded test. Welding required to both sills at rear Welding required to rear chassis rail N/S Brake pipe (surprise surprise) Rear Wheel Bearing O/S The wheel bearing one worries me as usually (from what I've read on here) by the time the bearing is noticed it will have damaged the Hub Carrier and /or hub itself. Are these parts still available new from Ford? Are secondhand ones worth a shot? It's a 1996 2.0 Ultima Saloon (Stuart will know this one - the Loden Green one he sold me) David

Don't buy cars from dodgy people! this one here ? : http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=cars;action=disp lay;num=1245073937;start=0 How times flies! that was almost TWO years ago to the day.. Usually the first sign of a worn rear wheel bearing will be the bearing collapsing and this can damage the hub but you should be ok as its been caught early.. I wouldnt drive it though. I've never done it but I believe the Granada sills are readily available and can be made to fit pretty easily.

Thats the one Stuart, the one with the loose wheel nuts and those unusual sized front discs! It's up at the mechanics now to have the hub taken apart to check for damage so fingers crossed. I believe the sills (and chassis) are just being plated this time around as apparently it's not terminal so hope to get the car back on the road within a few days. How's the fleet these days? David

Car through the test now... Turns out the wheel bearing hadn't failed but the hub nut had worked loose Good job the test was due as I hadn't noticed any problems! David

Keep an eye on it, they shouldn't really come loose if assembled correctly & torqued up properly, it could indicate a problem. Races rely on there hardness for strength, if there’s a problem that causes them to overheat the cones can collapse slightly which means the nut seems loose (but may not have actually loosened), but when you tighten it it then becomes tight due to the distortion & overheats again. Just running it with the nut loose can cause premature failure since they rely on the correct preload. Personally I’d change a wheel bearing that had come loose, but probably not a common view.
